Title: Learning how to use the info on your sounder to catch fish!
Post by: codhunter on May 29, 2014, 08:27:04 AM
Hello all,

I have had my 798cisi for approx 4yrs and I still do not make proper use of it. By this I mean that, I can see what's around and under the boat, whether it's fish,or structure on the bottom and other stuff. Is there a tutorial that teaches me to convert this info into fish? I see the fish on the screen and I don't know how to best use this info. How do I stay with the fish. What do I do next. A video of some sort showing the sounder working. and then when something interesting comes into view what are the next steps?  I would not be wrong in saying many sounder owners have the best of the best sounders but don't how to use them effectively to catch fish. Any info to help would be great. If any others feel the same way as I do, your input would be most welcome. Cheers.

Do you have some screenshots you can post in the General forum (or your specific unit forum)...

And describe your "snake oil" issue along with the screenshots...

There may be technical issues with your unit...

And there is plenty of help in the forums to aid in your learning curve...(if this is what "snake oil" means)...

did you make any progress this season codhunter?
i've been learning how to effectively transition sonar information into fish as well.
couple things:
-Carry a small crappie rod to catch the bait (in my waters i've learned white perch hold in open water...and crappie usually hold on  cover).
-Don't position ur boat directly on top of the bait.  Fish 100 ft away from the bait ball, in all four directions.  Note if you get bites while shallow or deep etc of the bait.
-Fishing bait balls that are relating to cover/structure is easier than fishing bait that is suspended over open water.
-Ideally only fish bait balls that have game fish arches around them.  However if there is bait holding tight to structure you might not be able to see the game fish so cast anyway.
-Use marker buoys to mark bait balls.  You'll be surprised how fast/far a 9mph wind will blow you off a spot. Having a visual buoy helps keep you casting effectively.
