Title: 398ci SI vs 598ci HD SI vs 798ci SI for bottom mapping?
Post by: bigkahuna on December 04, 2013, 05:06:24 PM
Looks like Humminbird has added some new, low cost SI sonars since I last visited this topic.  I'm looking to create some bottom maps using SonarTRX and Reefmaster.  Just looking at the specs of the 3 sonars, their SI / DI capabilities look identical, the only difference (for my application at least) is screen size, resolution and networking capability.  Neither software supports real time data input (too bad Dr Depth is no longer available) so I'm guessing the 398ci SI will do me.  Or did I miss something?

Your assessment of the three units is spot-on, except you can shop around and get the 598 for under $600. If you go with the 398, you will ruin your eyes trying to see the screen.

ReefMaster does support live-mapping. There is a tutorial in the new Reference Manual.

Ok, so if I'm reading this right:

398 - same sonar specs but smallest screen
598 - same sonar specs but larger screen
798 - same sonar specs but larger screen and real time networking

So if I wanted real time sonar output to Reef Master I will need to get the 798.  Otherwise either the 398 or 598 would give me the same non-real time data output.

For this project "portability" may outweigh screen size.  But we may want to have a real time display on a computer screen, in which case the 798 would be the one to get.

Go to the ReefMaster forum site (reefmaster.com.au/index.php/forum/index) and there are articles and pictures on how to patch to your laptop for live logging. My 598 does it (so the 798 should too), not sure about the 398 output connections. On the forum, you can talk with others that have done this.

Thanks Lou.  Didn't find it when I was last on those forums, will have to give it another search.  One other difference I found between the models is that the 798 is the only one of the three that can be upgraded to use the AS 360SSI, which I'm not currently planning on using but might want to use in the future.
