Title: Bird down
Post by: great pappy cat on January 09, 2011, 01:58:44 AM
Hello all I had a bad day on the water on the 3rd to the last trip of the season, my prized humminbird 997c went nuts :o?? I made a short video when it happened.

Can any one tell me what the heck happened?  My unit is 6 months out of warranty
I already contacted customer service and was told it was a $258.95 flat rate to replace. Is it possible to upgrade to a 998c at this point? I spent countless hours putting info on the fishfinder. will all this be lost.  Thank you in advance ...Joe Gunter the Catfish Hunter

Hello Joe,
I checked your video. Exactly the same happened to me a couple of times last season and it drove me nuts. I sent it back to JOHNSON OUTDOORS UK and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Mark suggested to check my electrical installation on the boat.

I found out that a bad battery didn't supply enough power from time to time.

I would suggest you check the wires and the connectors and if the battery provides enough juice to start from as well.

Hope this helps and good luck

Best wishes from Germany

Harry

Joe hook your 997 up to a 12 volt power supply before you send it in.That way
you eliminate batterys or power supply and wire connection problems. Gary

I haven't thought about this possibility.

That “power supply” could also be another 12 volt boat battery as well.

If different electrical connections do not help, I would than try loading an older version of software onto the unit.

If you knew someone with the PC Connect cables than you could possibly download the waypoints your unit has on it now.  If you do have to send the unit into Humminbird, the standard procedure is for the Tech to try and download your waypoints first before trying to repair it.  They get loaded back on after any repairs are made or if your unit has to be replaced.  However, there is the chance that this is not always possible so it is wise to always keep an updated copy of your waypoints on your computer.
