Seeing stuff in 2d but not 3d
« on: May 02, 2013, 02:38:19 PM »
I can post pictures if I need to but, I was out yesterday and while in split screen with 2d and the DI 3d mode- I would see huge returns on the 2d while nothing showed in the 3d.  Why would that happen?  I have a 898 and 998, both just installed and I am still trying to figure out how to read sonar.

By the way, I'm new to site and this is my first post.  Great forum!

What I would suggest is taking a few 10-15min. recordings in productive fish territory. When you get home tweak the contrast, sensitivity, and other settings until you can see fish on the DI/SI as well. Is the water murky where you fish? How deep are we talking? I had no trouble seeing fish in all of my views from factory settings.

I thought I had a pic, but do not.  I was in a river that was on the murky side, about 10-12 feet deep

We have to remember that the 2d beams are cone shaped while the SI/DI beams are thin slices...

It's much more likely that fish will be in a cone shaped beam longer than in a thin slice...allowing more "pings" to actually reflect off the fish...and therefore show a stronger fish echo return from the 2d...

I have found that the SI/DI is more attuned to finding the structure...while the 2d is more attuned to verifying there are fish present...

Thats important info, thanks.
So is that pic you put up a big clump of fish?  What species?

The clump is a brushpile with fish all in it...and a few around it...

Species....just guessing crappie because of the water temps (and the time of year)...

The only real way to verify fish species is to catch them.....but one can have a good idea of species by knowing the species habits for the time of year in question....

Crappie at 70° water temps are spawning, staging to spawn, and moving away from spawning.... in brushpiles in 8-14ft of water...and are generally in wads really close to the structure....(which would fit the image info for the time of year I captured this screenshot)

pretty cool, but how can you tell there is a brush pile there?  I see the fish on the outskirts though.
Are these fish in my image?  Im very new to sonar and have no confidence that what Im seeing is what I think it is....

I'm posting from my iPhone so the first image is difficult for me to make out any fish...

Your second pic definitely shows at least 2 fish...1 hugging the bottom and 1 at about 19'...

The echo returns are "longer" in the 2d image because of the coneshaped 2d beam allowed more "pings" to reflect off the fish while the fish was inside the beam shape...(especially at the speed you were going...the 2d cone shaped beam "pinged" that single fish several times to get an arch that long)..

Rickie

p.s. your image also shows some type of sonar blockage on the left side indicated by the lines just to the left of the centerline in the SI image...

Do you need help determining the cause and fix for this...??

Right on, my first fish on sonar!  I get it, the arch is really long because I was going so slow.
As far as the disruption on the left.  Thanks for comfirming that issue.  My guess is this is caused because I have the transducer mounted on starboard on the inside of the jackplate.  I think its catching the port side of the jackplate.....What do you recommend as a fix?

Either lower the transducer or many have had good success by installing a “hole shot” plate which covers the underside of the jackplate.

Thanks guys, went with big bucks and ordered the transducer sheild, etc.  got a set up for the trolling motor as well........that equipment is not cheap, but seems to be the way to go.....
