drawing tracks with waypoints
« on: August 21, 2011, 03:59:29 PM »
I have recently started using a Humminbird 998cSI and have recorded on an SD card some really good echo-traces and SI tracks which I am able to play back with Humviewer.  Which also displays the 2D track of the vessel.  And I have been able to look the recorded track on Google Earth.  However, I cannot work out how to download the track only, together with the waypoints.  I have tried using HumminbirdPC to look at the tracks but I cannot find the GPX files it requires.  It is evident that the tracks and the lat and long data have been recorded somehow, but how can I find them and display them without using Google Earth?  Should I have taken steps to record the navigational data separately from the sonar data?  Or are the tracks in the SON files or in the IDX files?  Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Loughine,

Did you remember to use the “Save Current Track” command from the “Navigation X-Press” menu, ...followed by the “Export All Nav Data” command from the “Navigation Menu Tab”?   I think only then will the track-data be copied back to the SD-card.  (...in contrast to the continuous SI-recordings, that always are stored on the card  as *.dat/*.son files etc.)

Hopefully you have not yet "Cleared" any of the most recent track information (i.e. it might still be available on the sonar.) After exporting the data from the sonar to the SD card, HumminbirdPC should be able to retrieve the track.

You could save the data from Google Earth and use GPSBabel to decompose it into individual waypoints.  I'm assuming that's what you want to do (view it in tablular form).

Hi Tore

I did not remember to use the save current track command.  I thought that if I recorded the sonar images on the SD card that the track and waypoints would also be recorded.  I think the data will still be available on the sonar, but at the moment the sonar is several hundred miles away from me, stored in a boathouse in Ireland.

The GPS track must be present on the SD card, as it is displayed by Humviewer, and as an image on Google Earth.

Wingnutt suggests I use GPSBabel to decompose the Google Earth track into individual waypoints.  I will investigate this

Thanks

Loughine

If you have a recording, I know SIView can export the track with the depth data.  I do this all the time.  I'm pretty sure that HumView also has this functionality.

The track is exported in either text or GPX formats in SIView.
