Anyone had a dark screen during power up?. Almost like a bad booting of the system. Powered off, then restarted and booted up fine. Anyone else had this happen with 1197s?

Check all of your power connections. Anything that is loose or corroded could decrease the voltage and/or current that is actually getting to the unit.

Thanks Greg.
Will check the pins on the connector. It did it once before and didn't think much of it, but last night did it again. You shut it off and restart and works fine.

my 1197 is ten days old and it does the same thing quite often. the push buttons will light up but the sceen remains black. after 3-4-5 times of powering down and restarting it comes to life. i've tried restoring defaults. i have updated to version 4.750. am waiting for a reply from HB tech support.

i have double checked all the power and ground wires to the unit. all seems ok with the wiring. i checked voltage at the power connector, has 12.53 volts. i had the dark screen at start up again today. one other thing i noticed today is that when it does power up my user mode will change from advanced back to normal mode. i always leave it set to the advanced mode. is something losing power internally causing it to default back to normal mode?

scoeri,
Is there a way that you can check the voltage at the power cable connections (the wire ends not the connector) when you are trying to power the 1197 on? Not the best way to diagnose this but it would help determine where the problem is. Even better would be to swap 1197 units with someone else just to see if your units will work on each other’s boats or not.

Have you tried using a dedicated power source for the 1197 and not sharing the power? Can you produce this on a bench test?.
Greg has a good idea of swapping with a known working boat.

I also experience the dark screen at start up. I don't think it has anything to do with the power supply. My unit has done it when being powered from the boat or home. Has anyone been able to determine the cause?

I've had this happen once as well . I triped the circut breaker for that battery that shut it off, rebooted it and it worked fine.
After reading other posts, I think it is a bad ground somewhere on that leg.

I found a loose connection on the hot side. was checking for a loose wire to my tach, bumped the connector to the bird and had one o them ur Eka moments.
I recall the bird shut off in a bit of rough water once , prolly that same connection
