Recording time?
« on: March 24, 2014, 10:43:47 AM »
I have the 1198c si unit.  Paired with the Navionics + map chip.  I want to use sonar charts.  What is the best length of time of a recording to view in humviewer, upload etc.?  I have a large 32gb extreme sandisk sd card.
Another question if I troll and record for say 10 min.  how big of file would that generate approx?

I think my 20 minute recordings average about 250Kb...

The longer the HB recording is, the longer it takes to load into Humviewer...(the GPS data file takes the longest to load in HV)...

I do not use Sonar Charts so I don't know the optimum recoding length for that application...

It is much better to do several shorter recordings than one VERY long recordings.  If for no other reason than you won't have so much to look thru if you are looking for something specific.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

You are correct...my mistake (that's what I get for guessing from memory)...

I went and checked 3 of my recordings

Recording #1 ...23 min 22 sec - 122Mb
Recording #2....24 min 12 sec - 112Mb
Recording #3....25 min 30 sec - 126Mb

Those sizes are the entire R0000x folder including all the associated files inside of it...

When I first got my 1197...I would fish all day until about 1 hour before dark...

Then I would motor my boat to a point about 1/2 mile away from my launch ramp..

Then I would start recording and record the entire bank toward the launch ramp staying about 30-40 feet from the bank...

This 1/2 mile stretch of water would take 15-25 minutes that I could then study in Humviewer and in my unit sitting side by side on my desk at home...

These early recordings taught me a lot about how water depth and bottom composition changes the images...
