NMEA 0183 capabilities
« on: March 10, 2015, 09:23:22 PM »
I don't know if this is feasible, or even possible, but I'd like to set up nmea connection from my 998 to a Lowrance elite5 to share waypoints.  Will this even work??  I know I wouldn't be able to share stored waypoints from one to the other, but what I'd like to do is create waypoints on both at the same time.  Make sense??  I can't find any information on doing this.  What I have found mostly has to do with radios and such, not linking 2 plot charters.  I'm pretty sure the connections are there to make the link, but would it do what I am wanting?  If I had them connected via nmea and both powered on, I create a waypoint on one, will it also be created on the other?  I hope this doesn't sound too crazy.  If that wouldn't work, then what would a nmea connection between them do? anything?

Nope, there is no way, that I know of, to share live waypoint data across brands.
I don't think that waypoints are a part of the NMEA 0183 sentence structure.  Coordinates are but not as a part of a waypoint per se.
A NMEA to NMEA cvonnection may or may not work at all or it could possibly damage one of the units.  I know that your 998 can receive NMEA 0183 data from another device but only as a GPS source (no waypoint data).

That's what I was wanting to know.  What model Humminbird would I need to do this? another 998?  I don't care about sonar, temp, depth, or anything else.  I only want to create waypoints on both at the same time.

Thanks.

Another 998 unit would certainly do it j_wireman but so would any other Ethernet capable model Humminbird unit.  Look at the current 800, 900 and 1100 series units.  In the past, some of the 700 series units were also Ethernet capable.

Yep .... Ethernet is definitely what you want to do to share waypoints between 2 Humminbird units.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**
