Today i upgraded my 998 with the new 5.410 upgrade. After doing so the unit keeps cycling through booting up and shutting down. So i immediatelly contacted humminbird who was real helpfully but still could not fix the problem. So now i am stuck with a unusable unit a day before i go away for prepratcice.

After i had this problem i searched this site for the 5.410 upgrade and right off found three posts with people having problems and one problem was just like mine.

So what i am asking is for anyone who has had this problem to come forward and say so becuase humminbird says they have not heard of it.
Also if anyone knows how to fix it please let me know. I do want to state that the humminbird customer service was very helpful in trying to fix the problem and i will probably have to send it off to get fixed

It might be possible to restore your unit via the humminbird PC bootstrap method.
I will try to find the post on this forum on how to do that...

Hi,
The Bootstrap method of restoring unit functionality will only work on the Humminbird legacy boxes that run on (what I call) the Matrix operating system. The 800's and the new 900 and 1000 Humminbird's (units with the faster processors) run on a Linux operating system. As far as I know Humminbird PC has NOT been upgraded to allow a "bootstrap like" operation on these newer units (like the 998c). I would guess you should connect with Humminbird Customer Support and see where it goes.

Good luck,
Roger

Geoff, thanks for the call.  Hopefully HB will get your unit rightback.
It would be great if they would also update the HB PC now..
When you get it back send some recordings.

ffmedic147,
Is that all your unit would do is start up and shut down automatically?
If so, than I do not know that this is a problem specific with the 5.410 software or at least I have not heard of it.
There is a lesser known issue with this software version (I think it is the 5.410 software) in that if you have the Sensitivity set to the Auto setting that it will restart the unit when you go to the Side Imaging or Down Imaging Views.  All you have to do is change the menu setting off of “Auto”.

First i started with my 998. I updated it and while it was updating it suddenly shut off. Well i figured maybe it was just rebooting (like a pc needs to do after it updates) but then it kept cycling on and off each tie just making it to the screen that shows the model number and shutting back down. After huminbird said send me the 998 to fix i decided to update my 958 to see if it did the same thing. It did. So now both of them are on the way to alabama and i am afraid to ever upgrade my units again. I hope they come back completely fixed and not doing something else wrong.

ffmedic147,
Usually when we hear about a unit shutting off during a software update it is because the power got interrupted.  Before your units get back I would go through and check all of the electrical connections on your boat and solder any that aren’t.  You want nothing twisted or crimped together and everything should be tight and sealed against water intrusion.  Be sure to check the fuse and fuse holder and battery connections too.

This is not just a 410 issue; I am running a 210 unit fresh from the box and updated only new hwr and ht files by adding them into the Matrix folder on an SD card. Reboots as soon as I cycle to what should be the Chart view on the next keystroke. See post in 210 vs 410.  This is, I am certain, related to Matrix interfacing. As an avionics tech, I can tell you that this is not power-related, as my unit is unable to move a mm, as it is bolted down with bolts as big as my finger and this occurred in the barn without any wind.

Does a 210 update solve this issue?  I went to the software update page but those files do not show reference to the April 2011 210 baseplate software . . . can we note them (besides their identification) per software names? I have three to choose from and one shows 0 bytes.

tambrose76,
First thing I would do is update the software in your unit to the current 5.500 software.  If that does not help than try deleting the data you imported from the Contour Elite program and see if it straightens up or not.  I have heard a few reports of tracks and routes imported from this program causing problems with our units.
