Topic: POWER OUTPUT 798 VS 1198

Hello.I just installed my 798 combo and am now wondering why some of the images
that look good are from a 1000 rms sounder.vs my 500 rms.
How important is the power output?
I fish on mostly med size lakes .depths of down to 150 ft .and mostly muddy bttm.
Did I buy the wrong unit or are the 1000 rms sounders more for coastal waters.
I'm in indiana.

To use the 1 kW output on the bigger unit, you must have the bronze transducer.
And also only work in 2D sonar..

Normally used by people for depth greater than 1000 ft.

are you saying that the 1kw units are not using the 1kw for side image-ing

No, only for 2D sonar...

and only with this particular transducer, which works in 200/50 kHz

Some of the differences seen in Si images from a 798 versus 1198 unit are due to the 1198 units (898, 997, 998, and 1197 as well) using a longer Si element inside of the HDSi transducer than do the 798 units.  This is why some 797/798 users opt to use the larger XHS-9-HDSi-180-T transducer that is shipped out with the 1198 unit.  Longer Si elements = narrower Si beam = a more detailed Si image.  Unfortunately not everyone can see this increase in detail on the smaller display of the 797 and 798 units.

thanks Chuck,I wish I would have known it sooner but then again I don't have the dollars to upgradeto wider screen .I/m sure dissapointed in this 798 side image and sure would not recomend it.I tried

Bob, post some images from your 798 unit along with what menu settings you are using.  I’m sure someone will post back on things to try.  You might also want to post some images of your transducer mounting (from far enough back that we can see your boat hull/transom area).

Don' t be disappointed, I can assure you, that at the beginning you cannot use all the power of 798.
I' m the owner of a 798 ci and last year I was impressed of Waine snapshots (798 owner , too). And he used the HD ducer.
After a year of use , I'm really satisfied.
The setting is really important. I had to learn it.

You could check some Doug videos to know the suggested setups.

The first shot is more than 24 feet.

I'm getting a little more confidence.Starting to understand a sittle more.  Sast week I found a log in 10 ft. of water and
part of the log was on the surface and the other end stuck in the bttm. I madr straight passes by it an never saw it on si
after 3 passes.
It must have been in my settings .But I don't remember them.

Bob, this could be an example of what you said.

I'm able to see the laydown well , only in the water column.
This because of the strong return of the bottom.
But if you look better you could notice that the laydown has a stronger return , just only a little bit.
That means that I had a wrong setup to scan this spot.
I should have "played" with the sensitivity and the contrast a little more, before to take the snapshot.
For Example decrease the sensitivity is usefull in situation like those to have a weaker return of the bottom and the increase of the contrast could help to mark better the differences between the dark areas and the clear areas.

Please Greg , correct me if I' m wrong.

Unit setting are everything. These devices will work right out of the box (most of the time) but getting the display you are interested in means playing with settings and tuning the box to meet your needs.
