Title: Finally broke down and bought 1198

Going to be retiring the old 997. Delivery scheduled for this friday on the 1198.

from what I have been reading think I will pass on the most recent update for now.

Anything else I should be aware of.

I would test it 9 ways til Sunday.

Check the software version that comes pre-installed on the unit...
*power on the unit...
*when the welcome screen shows - press "Menu"...
*of the choices listed...scroll down to "System Status"...
*note which version of software is pre-installed...
*download that pre-installed software version to your PC (or to a fully formatted separate SD Card)...

You will need it in the future...I promise...:)

Got here today a day earlier than expected. Installed and tested and waypoints uploaded from 997. So far so good. Only trouble is pouring rain preventing test on water. Unit came with version 6.49 software. As stated before I think I will keep it there. Am going to download copy of 6.49 as per suggestions to do so.
