SI Flicker problem
« on: November 10, 2013, 01:52:20 AM »
I have a 798ci SI HD on a 2011 Bass Tracker 175 and have noticed a problem.  When using side imaging the screen flickers.    Not a all the way off and on like a strobe-lite, but brighter and dimmer flicker.  I tried recording it on phone video but the recording flickers about the same. If I have it on 2d top/side bottom view just the SI flickers.  I have tried cleaning battery terminals, cleaning the pins and plugs going into the unit, checking fuse and connections, and pulling the shut off lanyard and coasting.  It seems to be more noticeable when using the higher contrast amber color.  I have also tried dropping/adding sensitivity and contrast.  Any guesses on what to check now or if it is problem in unit or transducer.  I don't know anyone else that has an HB unit so switching transducer isn't really an option that I have available.
Also, maybe unrelated, but I have always had increased noise just on right side water column in SI and problems with 80khz view since I bought the unit.  Not a big deal, just learned to deal with it.  I'm not against upgrading transducer, but don't want to spend the cash for another transducer and end up paying another $200 for unit repair, if it is the unit itself.  I bought the unit new and have enjoyed it, but not wanting to shell out a few hundred dollars to keep same unit.  Any help or direction would be appreciated.  Thanks

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums fieldtip.

Testing your unit on another boat would really be the best way to troubleshoot this.  Make sure that there are no other electrical devices on the next time you are out and see if this helps or not.  The problem could be in the amount of power getting to the unit – while the voltage may be fine the amount of current getting to the unit is not enough.  You could try temporarily rigging the power cable directly to the boat’s battery and see if that helps or not.  Other than that you would need to call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks.  If the unit is still under warranty it should not cost anything to repair it.
