Hi All
I'm reasonably new to boating and very new to scanning, thought I would say hello and show what I was getting up to . I'm interested in scan side to find some interesting places to dive on, I've got a lot of old fishing marks some of which contain wreaks, everything from sunken fishing trawlers to WW2 planes. Most of them are nothing, the eventual goal is to get a rough idea what is down there with a transom mounted side scan sonar then if it is something interesting drag a tow fish over the top to get a better image.
As it stands I've started the tow fish but it is just a shell in the garage (I'll hit up the DIY Tow Fish section when I'm ready to progress that), I've got a Garmin Echomaps Plus 95sv and a Humminbird Helix 7 G3N that are both mounted to the transom on a sliding transducer mount. When I move to the fish the the Helix will go on that but I wanted both operational now so I can play with recordings on the Helix.
I took it out last weekend to play with the mounting and learn what I'm looking at, unfortunately I didn't really run over any structure so it is just sandy bottom but i would welcome any tips or pointers that might speed up my trial and errors.
Sample one is in the river just after launch, probably doing about 4 kts
Sample two is out in a bay doing about 6 kts, the notch in the left side was when i trimmed the motor up, is it normal for it to be in view of the transducer when fully down?
Ideally I'd trade a little bit of image quality for speed while the transducer is mounted to the transom so i can cover more ground and make up for image quality with the fish but it has to been good enough not to miss anything.

Side imaging works best at 3-4mph - try idle speed and match Chart Speed to boat speed on the Humminbird (3-4mph = Chart Speed 3-4) ...
The side imaging beam form reaches all the way to the water’s surface on each side to past vertical under the boat ... It is normal to need to trim the motor up out of the SI beam ...
