How do you update a humminbird 898si combo? What does the update do? How often should i do it?

Updates usually add functionality to the unit if there have been new hardware accessories that have been added. Most of the time it's just software tweaking. As of now, sounds like a lot of problems with anything above v6.4x

I always read the new HB software release descriptions to grade the value of updating my 1197/998 units.
But HB descriptions leave alot to be desired.  They release undocumented code changes.

I ALWAYS SAVE ALL SOFTWARE RELEASES on my home computer in case I must fall-back to my previous version.

But I upgrade almost immediately, then view and test my HB units in simulator and on-the-water for glitches.
Would be safer to wait 3-4 weeks after a release and search forums or "Google-for" problems.

How do you find which software ver. you have? new 998c HD SI combo not installed yet.

That's a very good question.
Maybe it shows at boot-up, or it shows in the system status page?
