Title: damaged casing on 798si
Post by: 798 shattered on October 12, 2011, 04:06:45 AM
hello all,
i have a 798 that has extensive cracks to its casing (sister dropped maybe? never taking her fishing again) also has cracks where the sd card cover attatches. has anyone else had issues like this? not sure how sd card cover and sorounds crack when the screen cover is over the whole thing? still works though, if anyone has a unit that does not work i am interested in purchasing it and swapping covers to maintain the IP rating of my unit. cheers

If you can't find a new casing, you could use some
5200 marine sealer.
This stuff is made for below waterline repairs, so it's
waterproof.

It's also an adhesive.
It comes in white and black, I'd use black.
All you need is a little squeeze tube of it, not a whole calk tube.
I'd use it very sparingly.
It takes a week to fully cure.

Good Luck.

Just some cautions here:

5200 or any other type of adhesive or sealer could react with the plastic of the case.
Swapping the case is not that simple as the display is bonded to the front housing… there is also the concern of ESD damage.
Best way to take care of this would be to send the unit in to be fixed but this is most likely the most expensive way as well.
