1198c transducer replacement with TotalScan?
« on: May 16, 2017, 10:47:03 PM »
Hi,

First post, so I'm sorry if it's already been covered but I cant see any info on here re TotalScan.

I run both an 1198 and a Lowrance Gen 3 (LSS2 and skimmer).

My 1198c  wires have corroded/snapped off at the puck.  I asked our local dealer about a replacement transducerand I was quoted $580! (AUD) for what I believe is the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T.  I can get cheaper on ebay but they are international not local.  I thought that this was ridiculous and remembered that there has been a bit of work here interfacing LSS 2 and when I checked the price (Australian dollars that is) Locally I can get;

XHS 9 HDSI 180 T - $580!!!
LSS2 for $225.
TotalScan for $275

Can someone explain (most likely Rickie-rnvinc) if I should get the TotalScan as it looks like it's a Lowrance ripoff for the HB original and may work the same.   Or should I just go with the LSS2, or is the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T better (obviously easier), and just wait for the shipping.

I'm happy to cut and splice, I just don't want to pay twice the amount for not having to do a little soldering!

I could get the TotalScan and plug it into the HDS gen 3 and use the existing LSS2, but the 2d could be the issue there.

Thanks,
Tam

Hi Tam,
I think the TotalScan can be interfaced with your HB in much the same way as the LSS-2 + a 2d transducer. This would be a "LowBird"-like arrangement with less need for cutting, splicing and soldering than with the old Lowbird. I got the pin assignment for the TotalScan from the Lowrance representative and it looks similar to the pin assignment in the LSS-2. Try to contact our member alufibre, he had plans for trying this last time I heard from him. See the pdf below.

I agree with Rickard that Totalscan is a viable option  ...

Remember with either choice (LSS or Totalscan) that the DI Imaging in your 1198 is not from a dedicated DI piezo - but instead the DI image in the 1198 is derived from the SI piezo data  ...

So you will not be able to splice wire channels to get SI and dedicated DI at the same time (in your 1198) from any Lowrance xducers  ...
-----

Also remember - it may be a better option to splice xducer extension cables instead of splicing the actual Lowrance xducer cable  ... This allows keeping the Lowrance xducer "in tact" for other uses...

Thanks guys!

Having the pinout really helps minimise the work.

I've purchased the totalscan unit. I'll let you know how I go.
