Screen protectors
« on: August 02, 2011, 09:39:50 PM »
Just an FYI...I ordered 2 screen protectors for my 898 and 1198 from Ebay...I have to say they are nice and easy to install...I fish saltwater and sometimes get spray.....If you want to protect your unit, i'd suggest ordering some......Just do a search on ebay, dont remember the sellers name but fast shipping and well worth the money IMO...........

I think he means like a clear screen protector.  The one I used off ebay was ScreenPatronous and they worked great.

Does the screen protector hender the view at all and I also thought these screens have a protective coating ?   What is the advantage then of the protectors  ( Scratches ? ).   I just do not want to mess that up but if yall think I need to add to mine I will.  I wonder when raptor cap is coming out with the 1197/1198 size.  I did purchase a visor for mine today that is made of a heavy plastic and screws on the unit using the two back mounting femail holes for indash mounting and the to mounting nuts for the bracket.  It seems to be good but the raptor cap verson is best I think.

For me cleaning the units after a day on the water made me get them..I have the same kind on my cell and they protect my phone...To be honest I didnt really notice much of a difference from the coating.....I always find myself touching the screen pointing out things on sidescan...lol....bait, fish guts n such probably arent the best things to put on the screen....You can try them if you want they are pretty cheap and the seller was awesome....The visor didnt work for me, mainly because I have a wrap around windsheild on my CC boat....For me a small investment in protection will keep my screen from scratches n such for a long time...Im going to order more and replace regularly....4K in electronics I wanna do all I can to keep my units tip top shape....Hope that helps Calli

I bought the Lexnard true vue anti-glare protector for my 1197 and have found it makes huge impact on readability with sunglasses and without.  Much improved sun performance.  Before the true vue protector I had difficulty reading the screen while wearing my Costa sunglasses.  After the true vue film I can actually see the screen pretty well  with glasses on or off.  Highly recommend the anti-glare protector.  I also picked up a Team Watters sun shield to cut down on the glare.  Both products have improved the clarity of the display.  Just be careful on the install as the lexnard can be tricky to get on without fingerprints underneath.  After the install the protector also does not seem to pick up any finger prints from my kids pointing at fish.

I also have the TeamWaters Sunshield on my 1197.
It's black plastic, easy to install, and works very well.

Although, in direct sunlight it's still hard to see the screen.
Based on Stratofisher's review, I just ordered a Lexnard anti-glare protector.

Thanks Stratofisher.

I have a TeamWaters Sheild now.  It is nice but once you install this to your unit...it is there and your "white" Humminbird front cover will no long fit.  That is why I liked the Raptor Cap so much...you can remover and then place your white sheild cover over the front.  Does anyone know when Raptor Cap comes out with the 1197/1198 series.  I have e-mailed them but no response.  The TeamWaters deal is good with a very long shelid.  Good Luck.

I contacted RaptorCap awhile ago.  They told me when they had enough requests, they would probably
build shields for the 1197/1198.  I gave them my email address and they said they would notify me when
they were available.  They never did notify me.
Because of the economy, they're probably isn't a large enough market for them to build the shields.

Here are a couple of snaps of my Team Watters shield with the  anti-glare installed.  This was a bright sunny day.  Would have had better images on the screen, but was downloading the Missouri fish attractor locations from the card.  Talk about taking a long time to download.  Lots of waypoints= 2hrs to download.

Thanks to Stratofisher's review, I bought and installed the Lexnard true vue anti-glare
protector on my 1197.
Based on what I had heard about fingerprints on the inside of it,
I put on latex gloves to handle it.
Unfortunately, the gloves left some powder residue on the inside of the protector.
I contacted the seller and she gave me some info.
I just had to wipe the protector with a wet lint free cloth.
This protector is just a very thin piece of vinyl with a sticky surface on
the back that attaches to the unit's screen.
I took it out on the water and it greatly reduces glare.
You can also touch it (on the outside) without leaving fingerprints on it.
I highly recommend it.

Glad it is working for you as well.  Had the 5yr old test today with fingers and still working like a champ.  Got to point those fish out to dad.  Great fishing trip with my son.

With me, it was more of reducing glare on the water than anything else.
I wanted to be able to see the screen better in sunlight.
The screen protection for me is not really important.

My 1197 doesn't have a keyboard. :-\
Keyboard protection or not,  you take a computer on your boat and it rains,
it's done, unless you have one of those ultra expensive waterproof computers.

mine neither, a soft protection for the combo (just as those for keyboard) would be perfect against water projection.
i just wonder why it doesn't exist.

After all the positives Re: "the screen protectors" I bought a ScreenPatronus and  am completely happy. I purchased online from the web site and the backup service was excellent also followup emails to let me know how the delivery was proceeding. Great product and excellent online service all the way to Australia in 10days.  ;D
Thanks to all who contributed.
