Hi all:

I'm the creator of SidescaCalculator, a small program that a few people on this forum have tried out.

Its been a couple of years since I have been working on processing routines for the Humminbird side imaging and 3D imaging files. Thanks to the hard work by Daniel Buscombe (see https://github.com/dbuscombe-usgs/PyHum), I have been encouraged to work on my Humminbird sidescan/multibeam project again.  Some of the old Linux-based processing programs which I had previously been using, such as USGS MIPS, have gone the way of the dinosaurs.  Fortunately, MB-System ( a very useful open source program for processing sidescan, multibeam, and segy data) is still active and regularly updated, and can, in fact, now directly import Humminbird xtf files.  New software bundles, such as OSGeo-Live have made access to Linux programs from Windows-based machines much simpler and easier.  And finally, after much head-banging, I've managed to decode and bottom pick the Humminbird multibeam (3D) data.  This unit (967 3D) is no longer produced by Humminbird, but if you can get your hands on one, it is the cheapest way imaginable to do shallow-water multibeam surveys!

I've put a ton of information and links up on my website (http://www.oceanecology.ca/new/multibeam.htm; later to be posted at http://www.oceanecology.ca/multibeam.htm), and lots of samples of processed images.  Much of the old software, such as Sidescan Calculator, that I had on my site previously, I have removed as it had become obsolete.

I hope some of this can be useful to other Humminbird users.

Cheers,
Barb (Ocean Ecology)

Updates to My Python Scripts
« Reply #4 on: December 18, 2014, 12:51:43 PM »
Hi all:

As I have been suspecting for some time now, the version of the Humminbird software that you have installed in your Humminbird unit affects the .SON and .DAT files that are generated by the unit.  I recently updated my Humminbird 967c 3D to software version 5.420 (the last version available for that unit) and my Humminbird 997c SI to software version 6.300 (also the last version available for that unit as well).  These updates caused some of my Python scripts to stop working.  I have found the changes that Humminbird has made to the .SON files, and modified my scripts to work with these changes - the new scripts are available from my website at http://www.oceanecology.ca/Software/PyHumMod.zip.  I'm not sure that they will work with software versions greater than 6.300, but if anyone is having problems, let me know.

Also, in my updating, I found that the changes made to the Humminbird 967c 3D now allows it to be a least partially viewed using the Humviewer software - see http://www.oceanecology.ca/multibeam.htm.  Interesting!

Cheers,
Barb
