help a newbie
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:50:47 AM »
I have a new 798ci that I installed myself.  Everything is working great except when i hit a wave sometimes the unit shuts down.  I have replaced/ recrimped the power connections twice.  Also, i have a Garmin unit right next to it that has never shut down no matter how bad the conditions were.  The VHF and all the other electronics stay on while the 798 shuts off.  Can the wire harness be loose in the mount to cause it to shut down?  Any suggestion are appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Hello Scott and welcome to the Forum!

Are you using an in line fuse holder or do you have the power wires connected to your fuse block?
In case you have an in line fuse holder, check there as well if everything is tight and without slag. Some of the older types where the fuse is hold in place by a spring the springs tension might be not enough and cause power loss when a hard hit occurs.

I suggest to use an ohm meter and measure the continuity of the power cord while rattling and shaking it to simulate hits or vibrations.

Another thing: Check if the power plug is sitting correctly in the cable collector.
I heard of cases where this wasn't the case and caused trouble.

If you cannot find anything wrong there, bent the pins of your cable plug ever so slightly outwards to make sure they have decent contact in the socket of your unit. But be carefull there and don't bend them too much! If you bend them too much, they will not slip into their places in the socket and you might brake them if you force the plug into the socket.

Good luck and regards from Germany

It is hooked to a fuse block.  I will pull the cables out of the mount and realign them and maybe bend the pins.
Thanks for the help.

Hey Scott,

Welcome to the forum.  We are neighbors.  I live in Beaufort and work in HHI and Bluffton!

Most likely it is the Power Cable connector.  Bend the pins out slightly so it fits a little better.  I had the same problem with my 997c.

Good Luck,

Robert

Hello Robert,

I am happy to know that someone seasoned with side imaging technology such as yourself is using it in my area.

I am very interested in using the imaging for fishing.
What settings do you find are the best for viewing the artificial reefs offshore?  Maybe you can make my learning curve go a little faster.

Again thanks for the help.
