Guys,
I don't know if any of you have realized this, but when you turn your machine on,
every waypoint that you've ever created gets loaded into memory (unless you have
deleted them).
It also checks your SD card.  If you have waypoints on your SD card
that are not in your unit, then they get loaded in too.
Even if these waypoint are saved on a hard drive/flash memory, if it's displaying them
on your screen, then they are using memory and system resources.

Just sit in your driveway and move the cursor to the areas you fish.
You'll see every single waypoint.

Just like a computer, every icon on your desktop takes memory to display.
Also, the more stuff loaded into your computer, the slower it will work.

The problem is, I only fish one place at a time.
So, if I'm fishing lake A, then I don't need the waypoints for
Lake B, and Lake C loaded in.
I also don't need the waypoints for River A loaded.

I'm going to get maybe 5 small (2gb) SD cards.
I'm going to copy my DATA.HWR file multiple times.
Then using HumminbirdPc, I'm going to modify each file
so that I'll end up with one SD card of each area I fish with
only it's waypoints on that card.

Then, every time I go fishing, I'm going to delete all the waypoints from my unit.
Then load in only the card I need.
If I create any new waypoints while on the water, all I need to do is to
Export all waypoints to the same card to save them.
So, I won't ever loose anything.

It will take some work, but in the long run, I guarantee my unit
will work better for it.

Currently I have less than 1,000 waypoints and
I'm having trouble viewing sonar recordings.
I think it's a memory thing but I can't prove it.
I can't emagine the problems I would have if I had the 3,000 waypoints
that the unit will supposedly hold.

You might want to consider doing this yourself.

I think when Humminbird built these units, they did not test them
with all of the options (GPS, WeatherSense, Xm Weather), and
loaded in with hundreds or thousands of waypoints.

I think the accessories came after the units were designed, so the units
are not powerful enough/don't have enough memory to handle everything.

Thoughts?

I find that the tracks and routes take up much more memory and can slow things down unless they are deleted every once in a while.

The DATA.HWR file with a thousand waypoints and no route or track info, is very small.

I figure there are AT LEAST 4 pieces of information stored for each waypoint:
Name
Icon
Longitude coordinate
Latitute coordinate

Yes we are dealing with a computer. That is why HB come out with I believe dual faster processor even with that
if you really load them up you will see slower operating speeds some of these new updates or codes are big files
Tracks depends on the ping rate you have set.It all takes a bite.

A computer indeed.  Well a computer at any rate.
A lot goes into a computer and the relationship of data.
In order to keep costs down smaller processors and usable memory are often the losers.

Tracks and waypoints in memory will have zero effect on the units' operation as far as speed.  They are just sitting there, and unless the processor accesses them they are doing nothing.

Why would the processor access them?  Why, to DISPLAY them on the screen.  And if you have a track (the current track, in all probability) that has 20,0000 points, and the unit has to display most of them and move them as the boat moves, it just might slow the machine down.

I would recommend you turn off the aerial overlay layer and the 3D view on your map card first.  I found that moving that bitmap around DID choke my 1197.

They don't require much memory to be stored, but the screen is refreshed constantly as the boat moves. Displaying the information on the screen uses system resources that can become limiting and slow down the redraw rate.

My unit seems to delete older track information when resources become limiting.

Anything you can see on your screen takes memory to display/paint.
Same as Icons on your computer.

werethefugowee: I haven't split up the files yet.
Waiting on the SD cards.
I'll let you know.
