Hijacking Threads and Posting Etiquette
« on: March 28, 2010, 11:00:00 AM »
I wanted to do a quick post and remind everyone about posting etiquette.  The forum has grown tremendously over the last few months and we are starting to get some great topics for discussion and we are also getting some technical support questions.

Please do not hijack a support question by posting on another topic.  It may have something to do with the topic at hand but can send the thread in a separate direction and the original question does not get answered.  Its always best to start a new topic.

It also helps with searching the forum.  If your issue is buried under another topic name, it will make it harder for other users to find.

Please help to keep topics on track.  If your post does not relate directly to the original post, it probably should be in its own thread!

Thanks for helping make this forum such a success.

Hi Rob,
As a newbie to any type of internet forum how can a member avoid highjacking a thread and could you explain forum etiquette please or is there a page on this site that does explain the setup. Also is it possible to change my user name?
Thanks again for all your help
Regards
Geoff

Geoff, to prevent hijacking a thread look at the topic header and then the posts. Ensure that your post is relative to the topic and the posts. This will keep the thread on target.  Small humor can be posted without hijacking but the post main theme should be in content and context to the header subject.

Sometimes it is easier to just post but in reality you will need to start a new topic. This is easy from the main menue by selecting the forums area of the topic and then posting a new thread.
In short dont start a new topic within a preeixting topic.

Hope this helps.

Chuck

Etiquette
on the other hand will be left to Robert to answer....Since he is the top person for the forum.

Geoff,

Chuck is correct.  Never ask a new question in someone elses topic or change the subject.  Its better to start a new thread so the issue can be addressed specifically.  It also helps when new users are searching for answers.

As for posting and forum ettiquette, here are a few rules to follow:

  • Avoid using all CAPS in your post.  IT'S LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING AT SOMEONE!
  • Stay on topic.  Dont change the subject in the middle of post.  Create a new topic if needed.
  • No cursing or bad language.
  • No personal attacks or insults.  We have a great group of guys here and everyone seems to get along pretty well.
  • And Always try to say hello to new members and make them feel welcome.
