Topic: Sunken Jon Boat

I caught this a hundred yards from the boat ramp. And it looks like a good image of a sunken jon boat.  You can see the ribs in the hull.  I thought this was from some duck hunters that submerged in January, but I don't see a motor, so I doubt it is the same.  Also appears to be a school of baitfish off the bow... Thoughts?

Great pict!  I dont see a motor either.  Now you just need to dive down, hook it up and pull it to the bank!

What I think is the bow of your boat is casting a pretty large shadow for traveling almost
directly over it. Maybe the motor fell off and is underneath it.

My apologies, I had the bow and stern confused.  baitfish off the stern.   Yes, there is some blockage on the left, which I am attibuting to the trim tab.  I'd rather live with the interference than without the trim tab.  So far I havent had much of an issue seeing what I need to over there.

So that Jon boat is 30 feet long & 12 feet wide

With correction the boat seems to be about 36 feet long - must be something else than a Jon boat.

Hmm.  If I had known it was that big, I would have dropped a hook.  Those might have been some nice crappie.  Sure looked like a jon boat... I was in Alabama, so there's really no way to be sure   So to understand, you just compared the length of the object vs, the 100ft to determine the length of the Roll Tidetanic?

Yes, just relating the length of the object to view width gives a rough estimate of object size. To arrive at a more precise estimate the Pythagorean theorem is used. This is called "slant range correction". The corrected distances/lengths are always longer than before correction.

I have to agree.  I didn't pay attention to the depth and range when I first looked at it.  It is pretty big.

What had me thinking it was something unusual was the shadow.  Do you notice the two shadows on each side of the stern?  They are very pronounced and are protruding from the sides.

If you get a recording of the target, you can play it back on one of the viewers and possibly bring out some more detail.

Could be a small barge of some sort!

I did notice those shadows..  I will get back out to that spot later this spring, and see what else I can learn about it. It does look boatish though.  Might be an old dock building barge or something.
