Curious to know if anyone else has a screen (my 797c2i SI in particular shows this condition as it is reaching over 1 year in service) that has rain spots that won't clean off. I've tried gentle cleaning with a microfiber cloth and water to no avail. It is as if the rain actually etched into the screen, but there is no pitting or rough surfaces.
Any suggestions to try on various methods or materials to use would be appreciated. I could also post pics if needed.

Try putting a couple of drops of liquid hand soap on the screen. Then rub it all around till the whole screen is covered. Clean off with a wet towel or paper towel.

I installed invisishield on my units and never have a problem cleaning them now.

From what I have read and tried using is Windex Multi-Surface with VINEGAR (not ammonia). One of the guys wet a paper towel with the multi-surface and layed it on the screen for a period of time(?), then removed the towel and wiped the screen clean removing all of the water spots.

Also, I believe that HB recommends this product. You can do a search on cleaning the screen for more information.

The key to using either may be in letting it soak for a few minutes first by tilting the unit backwards so it doesn't all run off.
I've heard nothing but good things from the guys who have used the clean screen protectors like Soretoe mentioned. Of course they won't protect the display when that 1 oz. jig comes calling!

Here's a pic of the screen after several attempts with the Windex and Sparkle recommendations. I now think the coating has been "eaten" off by the harsh Illinois rains...
While not as bad as the jig hitting the screen, you can clearly see how this could be slightly annoying when viewing. Sunlight and polarized sunglasses intensify this effect.

That is pretty bad! I had some rain spots on my 987c, but no where near this.

I highly recommend screen protects and this is a good example why. I wonder if you put a screen protector over it now if it would go away or at least cut down on how noticeable the spots are.

If only I knew then what I know now... I agree that a screen protector is a good investment. Any suggestions on brands and where to get them? I'd need sizes for the 797 and the 997. Or huge sheets I can cut.

I had bad rain spots on my Low. I used an eyeglass cloth and a deep rub to get them out.

After re reading the above, I would try soaking a micro-cloth in Windex Multi-Surface with VINEGAR, then laying over the screen for appx 30 minutes first, then do a light wiping and see if this helps, I would probably go up to a couple of hours to try and soak the spots.

I have found that a good soaking with a non invasive product works, but you must be patient. When I try to rush it, I end up destroying it.

In the end if you can not clean it you might have to have HB replace the screen. But do try soaking the spots.

After several cleanings I also put on a screen protector by Zagg

Does anyone know of a different product than the Zagg invisashield...

I've tried their product twice and I just cannot get all the bubbles out from under it...it's just way too sticky.....

And I used plenty of the solution when I tried....

I've already wasted $60 on 2 of the Zagg's with unsatisfactory results...

I was hoping to find a protector that works on static electricity instead of glue....

RN a trick I learned while watching a graphics shop apply logos to my truck. Spray the screen with windex then apply the protector.Rub out all bubbles with a soft plastic body filler applicator ( purchace at any auto parts store, they are inexpensive ). The windex under the screen will dry and you will have a bubbleless application.

Be carefull with the windex! It can disolve adhesives and may not be good for the screen.

Actually just a fine mist of water will work as well.

Take a spray bottle, fill with water, and add a drop or two of dawn (or similar) dish detergent. Use this to mist onto screen, then apply screen protector. Use a small squeegee to push the water and air bubbles out from under the screen protector. If you dont have a squeegee, a credit card works great!

I applied my Zagg screen without bubbles,, the biggest issue I had was uncurling the protector to install, this caused me a lot of frustration until I got set. Once the protector was on my very wet screen, I picked up one side to the middle re-wet it then squeegeed it down then lifted the other side and did the same think. I believe I had some small bubbles but protector dried clean without bubbles. I think it is easy to overwork these protectors, no matter who makes them.

Question, you stated that you tried installing it twice, how did you remove the screen to install another?

As Robert stated you must watch out that Windex or other window cleaning products can damage the UV coating on the HB units. Windex has a multi-surface with vinegar which is suggested by the HB reps.

Vinegar products work very well in removing calcium and other deposits. But regardless of what any of us say we need to be careful, too much of anything can do damage. Do just enough to fix the issue.

I guess this technique just takes some practice...but at $30 each....that's pretty expensive practicing.....

Last resort-I have used this on Lowrance screens...1/2 denatured alcohol w/ 1/2 distilled water..rub on screen w/ clean cotton cloth

"other" screen protectures should work fine. I was playing around with some and doing that which you suggested. I started with plastic with the idea if it scratched or spotted then make another one. UV screen will do the same. mounting the new protector is a bit of a challenge but most of us are pretty handy with tools. for our operation our unit is mounted in a portable box so afixing the screen was easy and very replaceable if needed. Back in the old days with lowrance units we cut plastic the size of the screen and just let is ride on the screen. but alas to our dismay it got stuff between and scratched the lowrance screen. So I would suggest if we build our own that it does not touch the HB screen and is easily removable to periodically clean dust or particles between the two. Chuckl

I use a shamwow or shammie polishing cloth soaked in dawn dish washing liquid,cut in a 6x6 sheets. squeeze out excess water and wipe off gently. then I take a dry one and polish it down till dry and no streeks. I keep a wet and dry in zip lock bags for when I`m fishing just in case I need to wipe down cause of fish throwing water or boat spray. works good for my 797siC2

Watered down vinegar solution? Hm, good idea I think. If you would use distilled water to water the vinegar I don't see a problem.

That's a good idea. I have a stock pile of shamwow cloths. Finally a great way to put them to use!

I'll try it and let you know how I go - the watermarks are really annoying, it's funny that I fish salt water a hell of a lot and get no marks, yet hit a fresh water lake, forget about wiping the screen down, then get spots!

I noticed that ZAGG doesn't carry a screen protector for the 997??? A friend of mine told me that he uses WD-40 to clean the screen. Will this hurt the UV coating?

I have been using the windex multi-surface and it works great. have not seen any problems with any degradation of the uv screen.

The Windex® Vinegar Multi Surface is the quick clean solution. However, if you still have water stain spots after using it, grab a microfiber cloth, wet it with warm water and apply a couple of small drops of Dawn® dishwashing liquid to the cloth. Gently wipe the screen clean with the portion of the cloth that you applied the Dawn® to, then warm rinse the cloth, wipe the screen and dry it with a couple of tissue papers. Your spots will be gone
