Issue with "NEW" posts symbol
« on: January 08, 2011, 01:12:19 PM »
Robert,

I'm having a small issue with the forum that maybe you can help with...and this is going to be hard to explain so bear with me....

I can open any subforum that shows I have unread posts in....there are "NEW" symbols next to the post titles I have not read...

If that subforum has more than 1 unread post title in it (2 or more "NEW" symbols)...I can open the 1st unread post and when I return to the subforum not only is the "NEW"   symbol gone on the post title I just read (as expected)...but the "NEW" symbol is also gone on the very next post title that I haven't read  yet (not expected)...

This problem is repeatable no matter which "unread" "NEW" post title I choose to open in the list of posts ...if there is another "Unread" "NEW" post title next in line..that post title's "NEW" symbol dissappears as if I read that post also..which I haven't

Is my question as clear as mud...??

Not sure whats happening.  So what you are saying is in the image below, when you click on the NEW next to "Bad News", when you return to the sub forum the NEW next to "Updating Problems" is also gone?

If so, it may be a problem with cookies the forum uses to track what post you have read.  What Internet Browser are using.  The forum is designed for Internet Explorer.  Some others browsers do not work completely.

I would suggest logging out and going into your internet options and deleting your temp internet files and cookies.  Log back in and see what happens.

Hope that helps,

Robert

Robert,

You are correct in your interpretation that your image represents....

I tried logging out...cleaning out my cookies and browsing history..and logging back in......same issue....I use IE..and this problem occurs on my home pc and my pc at work so I don't think it's just related to 1 pc..

Something interesting tho.....after I read a post...if I return the subforum using the "Back" button on my browser ...all posts with the "NEW" symbol beside them still have the "NEW" symbol beside them..even the one that I just read...

The problem occurring in my OP only happens when I return to the subforum using the "green quick-link" string directly above  the thread body...that is how I normally return to a subforum that I am currently in to continue reading "Unread" posts...

This problem is not overwhelming ....I just have to remember the title of which post I just read to make sure I don't skip the next one in line...because I definately don't want to miss anything in the forum...I love it here...  :)

Using the back button does not refresh the screen, so this is normal.  If you hit the back button, then hit the page refresh, the "NEW" button will disappear.

I am going to try the quick link like you mentioned and see what happens.

Robert

By this statement I'm assuming that you don't navigate thru the thread posts as you read them by using the green quick-link string above the thread body...

If there is another way to read thru "Unread" posts without my issue arising then I am more than willing to change the way I navigate thru the forum...

I just find it very handy to single click the green quick-link of the subforum that I'm reading thru to return me to that subforum so I can read the next "Unread" posted thread...

I use IE as well and always right-click and select “open in New Tab”.

Greg, do all of your "NEW" symbols disappear with the scenario mentioned above?  I cannot reproduce the issue rnvinc has described.

Thanks,

Robert

Robert,
They do but it may be because I end up going back to the “Home” page after viewing all the new posts.

Robert I cannot get the same failure either.  I do use the Home to go back to the front page for new postings also..

I always knew I was "Special"  ... ;)

Anyway..let's take Robert's image as an example....

ila_rendered

I can open the thread titled "updating problems" ......and read it...

Then I click on "Side Imaging Forums" in the green quick link string above the thread text to return me to the subforum I was in...

The "NEW" icon beside BOTH threads "updating problems" and "Transducer for my 987c SI" are missing.....

I expect the "NEW" icon beside "updating problems" to be gone because I just read that thread...but I do not expect the "NEW" icon beside "Transducer for my 987c SI" to also be missing because I have not yet read that thread...

Also the "NEW" icon beside "depth alarm" is still there indicating I have not yet read that thread...

The only "NEW" icon that is dissappearing unexpectedly is the one directly under the thread that I just read and returned to the subforum....

This is repeatable anywhere in the forum as long as there are at least 2 "NEW" icons in a row listed on the subforum that have the "NEW" icon beside them....

I find it very handy to use the green quick link string that is above (and below) each page of the forum to return to the subforum that i was reading thru...

This quirk that I am encountering is not that aggrivating ...I just have to remember which thread title I have just read so that I can open the very next one in line...(even tho it's "NEW" icon has dissappeared)...

No solution yet but I did some playing around with the topic "read" function.  I noticed that some of the sub areas have the Side Imaging Forum in the green string and some do not. All have Humminbird Side Imaging Forums. It depends on the topic submenue that you go to.
Now as to why and how the problem resuilts is something I have yet to make happen here.
But Robert, maybe you can look at the green strings and see why some have the mentioned selection and some do not.
Since we start our topic review (read) and since there are different topic submenus, it might be better to read the post and then return to the forum by using the HOME tab.
But I can see times when you might want to go directly to the submenue topic area.
So nothing to fix the problem as yet but I do see what RNV is talking about.
Strange computer stuff.

Something else I did find.
The green string containing the Side Imaging Forum is only in the submenue side imaging forum.
I could not find it in General or the others.
Each submenu has a green string that takes it directly back to the submenu. Which is good.
But I can not or have not yet been able to reproduce the RNV problem so dont know if it is happening in the other submenus. Or is somthing particular to just the side imagining forum green selection..

RNV have you seen this when in other submenus?.

Ok guys bear with me for a few days.....

I think I'm tracking this issue down to a certain pc that I use at work...which would mean that it's not an issue with the forum at all...

I could have sworn this was happening on my home pc also...

Told ya I was ""Special".. :o

I'm off till Monday..so I'll check into this again Monday when I can gain access to that specific pc...

I really appreciate all of your help...

Good deal.  Patience is the best virtue.. ::)
IOt would be nice if we could narrow it down to one pc.
Keep in touch and have a great week end.
As always, let us know of any information change or results..

OK, this issue definately has something to do with the computer system at work....

I tried 2 different pc's at work and get the same repeatable issue...

And I cannot repeat the issue on my home pc...

So, that tells me that the issue is not with the forum at all but something to do with the way the servers store cookies at work or something similar...

I apologize for sending you guys on a "wild goose chase"....

Still proves that I'm "Special"....maybe in my own mind anyway... :)

Thanks for the update.
This is what makes the forum special. Folks can have issues and the others here help with willingness and good ability.
There is a lot of talent here and all are great at sharing knowledge and helping.
From postings like yours we all learn for those issues that may have happend to others who did not post.
Robert posted a long time ago...there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Questions result in answers which then fill the data base with information that can be rediscovered thru the search function.
Glad things are going better and if you find the culprit at the other 2 computers, follow up with the discovery.

Chuck
