Topic: How do you Interlink new 898 to older units

I am new to this forum and what to say Hi and that this is a great forum with lots of information. I have read through some of the other post concerning the new GPS receiver and the older units and haven't found a simple answer to my question.

I have a new 898c on the way and want to connect it with my older 767c through the interlink. I assume I need to replace my older GPS receiver with the new one? I really don't want two GPS receivers on my boat so how do I hook my new 898c and my old 767 up to use the interlink unit to share waypoints and use one GPS receiver ?

There is no simple answer to your question as there are three possibilities here:

#1 – Connect the new GR50 GPS Receiver that comes with your new 898c Si unit directly to the InterLink.  The downside of this is that the 898c unit will always have to be turned on first and turned off last, otherwise the 767 unit will be powering the GR50 GPS Receiver and it will end up damaging the 767 unit’s internal electronic components.  Also, the position updates will be limited to only one per second (like what your 767 has now).  Both units would be connected straight to the InterLink using their COM connections.

#2 – Connect the GR50 GPS Receiver to an AS-SysLink cable with the 858c on the Primary cable connection and the 767 on the Secondary cable connection.  The same issue with the 8585 needing to be powered on first and off last still exists here but both units will be getting position updates at four times per second.  Both units would be connected to the InterLink by use of the AS-YC (Y-cable) ACCY-COM connectors and the AS-SysLink would be connected to the AS-YC NMEA-COM connectors.

#3 – Connect the GR50 GPS Receiver to the 858c via the NMEA-COM connector on the AS-YC Y-cable with the InterLink connected to the NMEA-COM connector of the AS-YC Y-cable.  The 767 gets connected straight to the InterLink via it’s COM port connector.  The downside of this is that the 858c has to be on and running before the 767 will get any GPS data.  So the 767 will not show any maps, menus or waypoints until the 858c gets powered on.  The 858c will be getting position updates at four times a second but the 767 will only get position updates once a second and there will be an added one second delay in getting the data from the 858c through the InterLink and into the 767.

There are actually two more possibilities here:

A.) Of course you could always get real creative and throw a little risk to the winds and figure out a way to power the GR50 GPS Receiver separately with it being connected to the InterLink.  This way either unit can use the GPS Receiver separately from the other.  No worries about damaging the 767 due to the power draw of the GR50 GPS Receiver but both units would be limited to the once a second position update.  Both units would be connected straight to the InterLink.

B.) Use two GPS Receivers.  Update the software in your 767.  Connect the GPS Receivers of each unit to their respective units (GR16 to the 767 and GR50 to the 858c) via the NMEA-COM connector of the As-YC Y-cable.  The InterLink gets connected to both units through the ACCY-COM connector of their AS-YC cables.  Both units will be getting position updates at four times per second.  Any waypoint marked from sonar information will be more accurate (as long as the GPS Receiver is mounted close to the transducer that unit is using) and either unit will have GPS regardless of whether the other unit is on or not.  No extra cables will need to be bought for this as you should have the AS-YC cable that came with your 767 unit, the 858c will come with one and all other cables needed are included with the InterLink.

Thanks for the response. Would just using the GR16 GPS receiver cause any problems with my 898c unit? Updating 1 or 4 times a second doesn't bother me but don't want to take a chance on damaging either of my units.

No, the GR16 GPS Receiver will not cause any problems with the 898c Si unit.
