Greetings,
I am a Marine law enforcement officer in South Florida(Keys). We perform numerous SARs for missing divers, man overboard, etc. With a few thousand left in year end money, I am wondering the applicability of the 997 or 1197 in salt water environment for search and rescue. Is it worth the money, or should we look to spend the money elsewhere? Any advice would certainly be appreciated. Thanks

Well worth the money. I would go with the 1197c if budget permits. We use the 997c here and have had excellent results.

Thanks for the reply, Robert. I am thinking we may go the 1197. The money fits our budget perfectly. Would I just go with basicly a transome mount transducer. The boat we are looking to mount the unit on is a 28 foot deep V.

Yes the transom mount would be bets. But you may need to add a second transducer and a SILR Y cable for best performance. The deep V will block some of the SI signal. I have a 23' deep V and originally had just a single transducer and notice some loss of signal on the port side due to turbulence off the v.

fran35, I would suggest the 1197 for SAR. You will appreciate the larger screen on the water. I would also suggest an SD card for recording and to install a program on a copmputer like humview to review the recordings. Unless the target stands out you may miss it on the 1197 but see it on the review program.

Recordings can be sent to me for review also and assist in the reading of the recording.
One important piece of sonar (for search and recovery) is to approach your target area from different angles. side image will display data as it sees the reflection. Depending on the angle you are scanning the target, you may or may not get the expected picture. So for recovery searches We try to run several scans at adjacent angles. navigation and tracks will help you accomplish this.
