Navionics Maps and Sonar Data
« on: January 14, 2014, 06:27:22 PM »
Hi everyone.

I have the 598c SI sonar and recently got my self the Navionics Gold maps SD card.

However, i like to save the Sonar data to the Memory card and then open it up on my PC and view it later on with ReefMaster or other software.

After doing some reading, it turns out i cannot save the sonar data to the Navionics SD card since later on if i try to open the files on the PC, the maps will be destroyed due to the card format ?

Is there any way to keep the maps and transfer the sonar data to the PC?

fgcity,

You should be able to export tracks to another sd card, but you will not be able to make recordings or save snapshots to the maps SD card. Yes, it will damage it.

If you are just trying to export nav data to view waypoints and tracks, you should be fine.  Just remove the maps card, insert regular SD card and export.

Thank you, that's what i thought.

Just a question then...

I am a system engineer and i could probably hack my way into the motherboard. If i manage to hook up a second SD card slot into the board (i imagine the 598 and 798 have similar electronics) then would the software recognize the second card like on 798 or it would be a waste of time?

I would say it would be unlikely that the unit would just automatically recognize the second card.  The firmware of the unit would have to be customized somehow to allow writing to second slot.  No way of doing it that I know of.

just to clarify on the answer. if i have a navionics card in the unit and i make a sonar recording and screenshots of my way points then the unit will save that info from that trip on internal memory? then when i get home i can switch it out for a regular SD card and export all the data from that trip so i can look at it on my computer? im new too and this has been my ONLY concern with this unit.

No, only the Nav data (Waypoints, Routes and Tracks) is saved to the internal memory of the units.  Screen Snapshots and Sonar Recordings are saved to an available memory card.  The software should prevent the unit from saving any data to your mapping card but to make sure I would ensure that the lock tab (if it has one) is in the locked position on all my mapping cards.

If your unit has only one card slot you have to decide if you want to view the map card or make Screen Snapshots or Sonar Recordings.
