Title: 788ci HD DI transducer options
Post by: bluray19 on August 13, 2014, 11:19:00 AM
Hello,
I would like to know if I can use either a Quadra Beam Plus or a Wide Side transducer with the 788ci HD DI unit. I don't care if I don't get down imaging any longer.

You can bluray19 but:
- you will only be able to use the 200kHz 2D sonar
- that 2D sonar should appear very strong compared to what you have been using due to the larger piezo element within the QuadraBema and WideSide transducers.
- that stronger 200kHz sonar may have problems tracking the correct bottom reading when in very shallow water.

Be sure to set the Digital Depth Source menu to the “2D Element” setting or the unit will have problems detecting the lake bottom when in shallow water.

Any particular reason why you don't want to use the DI transducer and Di sonar?

We fish mostly in open water where the bottom is 50ft+, I thought the other transducers might give a wider coverage area. After searching around some, I've read that the "DI" units cannot use any other transducers, I've not seen a lot of benefit to the DI in our application, so a stronger 2D signal sounds good. I don't know how shallow your shallow water reference is, but we're not in less than 20' very often.

The 200kHz sonar will actually be narrower when you use either the QuadraBeam or WideSide transducers which is one of the things that will make the 200kHz sonar stronger.
I haven't tried either transducer with a DI model unit but around here less than 10 feet is getting shallow for sonar.
If you give this a try, please report back to us on how it works and post some screen snapshots as well.
