Title: 788ci DI Transducers
Post by: jbrady2852 on June 16, 2014, 04:21:27 PM
Doing an install of the XP 9 20 shoot-thru hull for the 999 ci Si and was thinking about also doing the XIH 9 DI T for my current 788ci DI for high speed.  Curious if I can connect both the Transom DI transducer and the shoot-thru hull together via the AS SIDB Y cable?

Good question jbrady2852 and one that I see getting answered incorrectly sometimes:

Yes, you can use the AS-Si-DB-Y cable to connect an inside-the-hull DI transducer to a transom mounted Di transducer.

However, I would question why you want to do this.  If this is to get better depth readings at higher boat speeds than this will work but you will need to change the Digital depth Source menu to the “2D Element” setting.  The reason for this is, unlike most of our units, the DI model units use the DI sonar to determine the water depth.  When using the AS-Si-DB-Y cable most connect the “Dual Beam” connector to the inside-the-hull transducer.  Doing so without making this menu change will not change how the unit will determine the water depth, so you have to make the menu change to tell the unit to use the 2D sonar (from the inside-the-hull transducer) to determine the water depth.

The reason for the question was as you mentioned depth readings at higher boat speeds but also picking up large target at higher speeds when the DI on the transom washes out.  The 2D on my install washes out at lower speed 10mph probably due to the install.  Since I already plan on doing a inside-the-hull I wonder the benefit of also doing the DI and removing the transom DI mount from the equation.  What is the performance +/- from switching from the transom DI to inside-the-hull?  Sounds like not much benefit having both connected together.

With any inside-the-hull type installation there will be some loss of signal strength and I’ve read of different amounts from different authorities on this.  Basically though; if you do a good job at installation most would not be able to notice a difference in the sonar readings.
