Title: 778 c HD European model
Post by: reds on October 22, 2013, 01:03:36 PM
Hi,

I have a 778 c HD unit with firmware 6.640. Before this firmware I had 5.210. I think the previous firmware had better quality in 60º beam than this updated one.
I talked with Humminbird and they only have 5.500 but I'm not sure if I can downgrade.
Is there any problem with that downgrade?

Attached is an image of dual beam plus split 83/200. I think the quality in the 83khz beam is not right.
What do you think?

Best regards

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums reds.

Yes you can downgrade the software in your unit, just don’t downgrade it to an older version than what it was originally built with.  Yours had 5.210 so installing the 5.500 should not be a problem.

The picture you posted is a little blurry but I can see some sort of interference in both the 83kHz and the 200kHz sonar.

Hi Greg,

thanks for the quick answer. The photo was taken with my mobile, so the quality is very low.
I've been reading issues about 6.640 and 2d sonar... pixelization, sonar speed, etc.

The 83khz has much less detail than 200khz. Shouldn't it show more information regarding the information in the 200 khz window?

Do you think it's best to downgrade to 5.500? I think 5.500 is before the 360º unit, right?

Can I use the AS GRP (without HS) with version 5.500?

Regards,
Luis

Luis,
Normally I would expect to see more ‘stuff’ in the 83kHz beam due to its wider coverage area, but that may not always be the case.  Depending on what is actually in the water and what interference may be present; you could end up with a display like you have.  Then there are menu settings that will affect what the 83kHz shows versus the 200kHz.  The fact that the same element within the transducer is responsible for making both the 200kHz and 83kHz sonar, I don’t think that it is a transducer issue but I could be wrong.

I don’t keep up with the European (International) versions of software for our units, so I don’t know when the 360 Imaging was added to the 778cX model units.  It was added in software version 6.570 in the U.S. (domestic) version units, with software version 6.500 being released before that.

I don’t recall reading anything about the 6.640 version software having sonar issues in anything but the 800/900/1100 series units but that could just be my “selective memory” as my Wife calls it!

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the help.

i will try 5.500 and if it doesn't help, I can upgrade ti 6.640 again.
I've seen some posts with problems with 6.640 in 2d sonar. Personally, I think something changed a lot because I notice strange things also.

Best regerdes,
Luís

I use split beam pretty exclusively, and find your 83 kHz signal just fine.

You can tweek it a little, but some water condition, you are stuck with what you have.
