Title: Navionics Community Resource Data and Humminbird
Post by: gwraith on April 29, 2013, 11:11:47 AM
I know that Humminbird units can't read or use data that has been submitted to Navionics by users (Community Resource Data).  Will a Humminbird unit be harmed for affected in any way if a chip with that data is inserted into the device??

You would think that if the format of the Navionics data
is the same as the format of the Navionics cards you purchase,
it may work.
I would wait to hear from Greg before trying it.

I don’t think that it will hurt the unit.  It should either use the new data layer or ignore it.  I have not heard of anyone having problems with this.

What about Navionics new SonarCharts layer on the Platinum + chip? I have a new 858c HD and running Navionics Platinum Plus. I went to their site and updated my chip with "Freshest Data" which includes SonarCharts however, I do not see anything different on my charts. The Navionics site says that the "community" can upload their recorded sonar data to the site and that data is then compiled and offered in daily updates. Navionics boasts that this will provide much more detailed information on the charts like more contours. Greg, are you familiar with this?

I don’t think that the SonarCharts data works on our units yet.

Since posting that above I think that I read where the Community Data has caused some problems with some of our units (I may be remembering this wrong) and had to be removed from the map card before it would load properly.  I’ll have to see what I can find out about this.  Not at work today so it will be some time next week before I can get to this.

greg,  I think the only units the "sonarcharts" works on for now are humminbird units.  I know the only data that they will take is from humminbird units.  Also from what I understand, you have to record your data, then sign into you navonics account and upload the data to there server,  then then will take that info and make you your sonar chart.  Now I just got off the phone with them and they said that humminbird units are one of the only units that will read the data of the sonarcharts feature.  you have to go into your settings and turn on the fish'n chips portion of the map to see the data from the sonarcharts.

How do you turn on the "Fish'n Chips" portion of the chart? Are you saying that in the Navionics menu, you just set everything to visible?

They said that its in the chart settings.  I would think if you choose to see all it should be visible, and there should be an option just to see fish n chips portion.  I have not done this yet so I cant really tell you.  Ive been doing a bunch of research before our boat goes in the water.

You do have  to select Fish n Chips in the chat select menu option. Curiously it is a different option than the Navionics card itself in the menu.

Can you explain (in full detail) the steps to turning on the FishinChip layer? This seems to be the reason I am not seeing any of the enhanced contours.  I have an 858c HD with Navionics Platinum Plus.

im not sure of the steps as im waiting to get out on the water to do my own log kits and upload them so I have not used it yet, but if you put in a call to navionics they can walk you through it.

Ok. I figured it out. I had a blank SD card in one slot and the Navionics Platinum in the other. The menu did not have an option to select a chart. I took out the blank card and left in the Platinum card, restarted the unit and now I get the Chart Select option with Fish'nChip and all is well. Wonder it Humminbird knows about this issue?
