XPTH 9 HDSI 180 T Install
« on: May 11, 2011, 07:49:58 AM »
I am exchanging my transom nount TD for a thru hull, shipping the un-installed one this week to HB. My question is anyone use this thru hull for the 1198c SI ? I lose bottom at higher speeds with the current TD that is hooked up to my 898c SI...I will be using two units, bought the 1198 because I wanted a bigger screen. Anyway, My boat is a typical fiberglass CC, no obstructions on the bottom of the hull, looking for comments and hints on the install and if the thru hull TD will give me better readings at high speed.

thanks, Ed
Big E

Ed,
Are you meaning the true Thru Hull XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T transducer or an inside-the-hull XP-9-20 transducer?

For your boat all you should have needed is the XP-9-20 DualBeam transducer and the AS-Si-DB-Y cable for bottom readings at higher boat speeds.

Greg, Yes the true thru hull not the epoxied in one. Already have the one provided for the 898c si installed, adding a second for the 1198c si. Cant install the TM one that comes with the 1198 because the side imaging beams would overlap and do not want to space one out further then the other.
The TH with the angled fairing block should read pretty good at higher speeds correct?

Ed,
I wouldn’t expect the TH transducers to perform very well at the higher boat speeds you would get with your fiberglass CC boat.  I guess if they are mounted just right that they would but than I have little experience in installing these transducers.  Normally these are installed on slower moving boats that do not “plane”.  You may also find that they produce a bit of drag as well and may cause your boat to pull to on side or the other.

Question: You have the 898 and 1198 so why not just use the one already installed HDSi transducer and use the Ethernet cable and share the sonar between these units?  There will be no installation of the TH transducer, no sonar-to-sonar interference and the cable should cost a lot less than the TH transducer will.

Greg, I have thought about that. I actually use the M12 connectors for my business and have cables already made, but to make sure I ordered the cable from HB and it’s on the way. Guess I am a newbie, I was hoping to have changes re: waypoints added to one machine go to the other, not just accessible but saved on that machine head also. If I mark on one head unit it’s saved on that one but only accessible on the other. Am I wrong in the operation? Or does a change made to one also make changes to the other? Or do I have to save the waypoints to SD card and upload to the other unit so they are “stored”. Stoked about my units so far and definitely don’t wants one side to raise or misread after the install of a TH transducer. If it all works out guess I’ll have a new Interlink for sale!!

With the Ethernet cable connecting the units; the waypoints stay on the unit that you used to mark it with and is available for the second unit to see/use the waypoint.  It would just like saving a file to an Ethernet connected hard drive on your home or work computer; the information is not on your computer but it is accessible.

If you want a copy of the same waypoints on both units that the SD card method is probably the least expensive and safer way to go about it.

Awesome...thanks Greg.....Is there a doc or something to help me with the upload of the waypoints saved on SD card to the other unit? Would it be possible when viewing the accessible waypoints on the second head to edit the waypoint and hit "save" then it would save a copy on that unit?

Ed,
I don’t know of any document for loading waypoints with an SD card.  It is pretty simple:
 - Install SD card.
 - Power unit on.
 - Unit automatically detects that waypoints, trackplots and rourtes are on the SD card and loads only those that are different from what the unit already has.
There is no option to save only certain waypoints.  If the second unit already has the same exact waypoint, than it will not let it load again.  Let me stress that this only happens if it is the same exact data.  If you renamed the waypoint, changes the icon or anything; than the unit assumes that is a different waypoint.  Just because two waypoints have the same coordinates does not mean they could not be two different waypoints.

Awesome thanks....Im not going to change the names-description or edit them. I do that when marking and namimg from the beginning...Sounds pretty easy and man its nice to have them backed up on SD and HPC...
