798ci Si HD random lockups
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:12:57 AM »
I've got a 798ci Si HD with 6.6.10 that has been randomly locking up and I have to turn the power off and back on.  I also tried saving an image for the 1st time and the when I tried viewing the image on a computer it says the image is blank.
Is there any chance it's related to the new software or any ideas what to try?
Thanks

Is this a new installation or was the unit working okay before you installed the 6.610 software (assuming here that you installed the 6.610 software)?

What was the file name and extension that you tried to open on your computer?

What brand, size, speed is the memory card that you are using?

I have that happen randomly a few times with my 998 running 6.49....

Haven't had a chance to determine a  cause because I haven't had a chance to install the unit permanently yet....

One thing I think may be happening is voltage to the unit may have gotten a little low on me (temporary  battery connection)..... but haven't localized that for sure.

I have noticed some unstable behavior other than that if I allow voltage to get below 11.5 so that is one thing to watch for... ;)

Edit:--
In the back of my mind I THINK I may have seen that mentioned in the firmware release notes for the 7xx series units, but I am away from my storage server now, so I can't be sure. If so it was listed as a fix... AND it was before 6.61......

Will try to remember to check for you later...

Installed last fall and the lockups just started this year.  I did install new batteries this year but, not sure how that could cause it.

I would check to see that no electrical connections got damaged when the new batteries got installed.

Since this is an existing installation, I am assuming that you also installed the 6.610 software.  I would see if this happens with all Nav Data deleted (I would use the Format Nav Directories menu for this) and all mapping/memory cards out of the unit.  Be sure to Export all of your Nav Data first and save it on your computer before deleting the Nav Data off the unit.

It's been a while, Sorry.

What next?
Thanks for all the help!

I had that to happen to my 898 I removed it from the starting battery and placed the birds on the spare battery. Then I put in a SCANDISK memory card. Being a sys admin, memory cards are not the same. Some CHEAP cards... cant keep up, so they will freeze the units while trying to access the SD card. Remember this, the larger the card, the faster it needs to be DONT GET the same speed 16gig card as the 32 gig card. It's access time will increase, slowing and hanging the unit.

I carry three batteries on my boat one starting, one trolling motor, and a spare. Those three tasks solved me. I can tell you when you are first starting the day and you are waiting on GPS to sync up, it will delay a few seconds when you switch views.
