Comparison 798c SI vs 898c SI Images
« on: February 04, 2013, 11:29:57 PM »
Hello, I have a 798c SI unit and use it to look for shipwrecks.  I would like to know how much better the 898 SI unit is and will it  improve image resolution or depth of scans using SI.  If you have any images with both units going over a structure or wreck at the same time, this would be ideal to evaluate the performance and help me to decide if I need an upgrade for the summer.

Thanks,

Lake Diver

I don't know for sure, but I would guess that the only
difference in these two units is the size of the screen.
You may not gain much with this upgrade.

Greg will know for sure.
I'd wait to hear from him before purchasing.

The 898c Si unit uses the longer HDSi transducer.  This allows for more detailed Si images and in theory Si images at a greater depth/distance.  I don’t have any data or images to back that last part up but considering it has a narrower/more focused beam this should be true.  You don’t have to buy the 898c Si to get this though; you can buy and use the same transducer with the 798c Si unit you have now.  The 798c Si unit will be able to use the 455kHz Si (and 2D sonar) portion of this transducer and what you should see are more defined sonar images versus using the shorter Compact Side Imaging (CSi) transducer that gets shipped with the 798 units.
