Newbie Humminbird Owner - Questions
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:09:27 AM »
OK, so for years I have wanted better electronics on my boat to replace the X49 Lowrance units that came on it.  At my dealer show this year I bought a 999SI/DI combo for the console area and an 859DI for the front.  I got a transducer bracket to mount the ducer to my Fortrex and have RAM mounts installed for both units.  Everything is pretty much set-up and ready to hit the water for the first learning experience.

First question.  I know the SI ducer will most likely not give high speed readings which is no big deal to me as I plan to just use my in-dash X49 for high speed as I have no reason to take it out of the dash and it already has a shoot through ducer.  I believe the ducer for the X49 is a 192Hz model.  Will there be an interference problem using the X49 while running at speed if the 999 is also on?  If so, I guess I could turn the 999 off while running between spots.

Second question, I plan to mount the SI ducer below the step and to the right of my livewell intakes and drain.  I have a 2002  Triton TR176 with a 115 and no jackplate.  Mounting on the step keeps the engine from being in the way of the SI unit.  I found a pic of a TR186 install on here and included it with the spot I plan to mount my ducer at as step on the boat in the picture is the same as mine.  Any thoughts on this location?

Thanks for your help and for this great site which will be a HUGE help for learning these units.

Brad

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums BradC.

First Question: Yes, you will probably have sonar-to-sonar interference if you install the transducer where you mention in your second question.  If there is any interference you can turn the sonar off as opposed to turning the whole unit off (press the power key once to see the Sonar menu).

Second Question: That location makes it more vulnerable to being damaged from water-borne debris and/or rocks, stumps and logs.  Plus if it hangs down below the bottom of the hull it could be damaged if you mis-load the boat (trailer bunks).  The livewell intake screen may also block some of the Si sonar to that side as well.  I would look at mounting it to the right of the jackplate if there is not enough room between the motor and transom as in the picture you posted.  You may have to trim your motor out to keep from blocking the left Si sonar but you will only be able to use the Si sonar at slow speeds anyways (it cannot update fast enough to be useful at fast boat speeds).

No jackplate on my boat, so I'll have to mount to the side of the motor if I mount on the transom.  It will have to be fairly close to the motor as the tie down strap will be in the way.  I assume the motor would only need to be trimmed a few inches as the SI ducer shoots straight to the side.

Thanks.

You will need about 7 inches of clearance to the side of the HDSI xducer in order to not block any of the SI beam ...
