Title: 788 Issues
Post by: flippingrass on April 09, 2013, 08:11:04 AM
Good morning, and first I must thank everyone for the help with mounting of my 997 on my Procraft.  I know its a frequently asked question and I appreciate everyones time, the install went great and seems to be working well so far.

Previously I had a 788c mounted on the transom.  The depth function worked with accurate readings of depth but did not every show a difference in bottom composition or never "marked" anything.  The temperature was always present on each screen view.  I recently moved this unit up front and installed on the trolling motor.  I was hoping that updating software would help these issues but unfortunately they have become worse. Here is a list of symptoms:
1. no constant and inaccurate depth readings
2. no temperature display on sonar view
3. very top of graph on sonar view shows color with nothing below it (almost as if its upside down with bottom on top instead of visa versa)
4. temperature display on the the birds eye view page only
5. gps functioning properly
6. on sonar view, graph scrolls through screens from top to bottom (always the sonar screen scrolling over and over)
7. when I accelerate on the trolling motor the depth reading spikes dramatically.
8. no matter how I adjust settings I can not get a bottom reading on sonar view.

I understand this may be an issue with interferance however since I was getting no bottom reading or marking ability prior to moving the graph I am assuming there may be another underlying issue.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks

Kevin

Kevin,
Try testing your 788c unit on your 997’s transducer and power cable (not the GPS) and see if you get any better results for the 2D sonar and water temperature.  Before doing this you may want to try just resetting the unit’s menus to the factory defaults by using the “Restore Defaults” menu.

I will try your suggestion and hope this either eliminates the head unit as the problem source or in worst case scenario spotlights the head unit and the "issue".

I did try resetting the factory defaults and it did not seem to change anything.

Thanks for the advice

This morning I took pictures of my 788 mounted on the trolling motor and then screen pictures of the 788 head unit connected to my 997 transmom mounted transducer.  Before doing anything on restored the defaults on the 788.  No matter how much I adjusted the sonar settings I could not get the sonar display to change.

This picture is 788 connected to 788 transducer mounted on the trolling motor while floating and/or no trolling motor power

This picture is moments after the previous picture only while engaging the trolling motor

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  In my opinion it seems as though my original transducer may be the issue at hand and in need of replacement.

I would say you are correct about the original transducer.  I would still get out into some deeper water and test your 788 unit further though.

Call the Humminbird Customer resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 and see what they are charging to repair a transducer now-a-days.

Thanks for the reply Greg, I appreciate it.  I do not mind spending the money to replace the transducer as oppossed to having it repaired.

Replacing the transducer would be faster but having it “repaired” would possibly save you some money (make sure you factor in shipping when comparing the two).  “Repaired” transducers are just replaced as there is no repairing these due to them being filled with epoxy.
