Two Transducers Mounted Side By Side
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:56:33 AM »
Will mounting two transducers (898 and 561) inches apart on the transom cause any problems?  Will the fequencies interfere with each other and cause readout problems on the units?

Thanks, Fuzz

Fuzz,
Not sure what a 615 is but yes they can interfere with each other in a few different ways:

First there is sonar-to-sonar interference or sonar cross-talk.  This happens if both units are using the same frequency and their sonar beams overlap.

The second way would be by interfering with the Si sonar signal.  If you mounted a second transducer to the right side of the 898’s HDSi transducer it could be physically blocking part of the right Si sonar.  The size of the transducer along with how far away from the HDSi transducer will determine how much of the right Si sonar beam gets blocked.

Greg,

Should have read 561, not 615 - sorry.  I mounted the 561 above the 898 transducer side plane, so it doen't block the side immaging.  The problem I'm having is my 898 depth readouts now jump all over.  The depth is correct on the screen, but the readouts go all over the place.  Just thought there could be some frequency issues that are making it do this.  I have the built in transducer on my terrova, I can connect the 561 without any problem.  Would that be better by keeping the transducers further apart (18 foot boat) and solve frequencies problems?

thanks, Fuzz

Installing the 561’s transducer higher is one of the few ways of getting around blocking the Si sonar beam Fuzz.  Still the same 200kHz frequency is used by both units for the conventional 2D sonar.  Before trying to move a transducer or using a different transducer try turning on and up the Noise Filter menu on the unit showing the problem, in this case your 898 unit.

Installing the transducer or using a different transducer that is farther away will help in shallower water in most instances but you will still end up with sonar cross-talk if the water gets deep enough.

Greg,

Thanks for your help.  Another question.

Can I go back to default factory settings without losing the only update (don't know number) that I've installed a while back?  Just can't get the readings or pics that I see on here and wonder if I should start over, as I've messed with it so much, who know what I've messed up.

Thanks,  Fuzz

Yes you can Fuzz.  Using the Restore Defaults menu only sets the menus back to the factory settings, it does nothing to the software.
