Towfish.....why use them?
« on: February 08, 2014, 08:37:28 PM »
I saw many examples of towfish in the gallery. I am wondering what the advantages of these units are, as opposed to.........a regular transducer mounting?

Thanks!!

Although I don't use one, I would say to get the transducer closer to the area being scanned for a higher quality and better detailed image.

Hello MT

Welcome to the Forum :)

With the towfish you can also be reached objects at greater depths.
The towfish eliminates the sea state influential.
Due to the distance to the boat, there are no influences by water turbulence.

After I asked the question, I got to thinking about the times I've seen them used on TV. I suppose that in addition to the explanations offered, the fact that the towfish is being towed by a cable, the arc of the cable would provide a "cushioning" effect. As the boat on the surface bobs all around from wave action, the towfish retains a rather smooth path through the water column, and consequently, provides better images.
