Sometimes erratic depth readings are because of interference.
You haven't put up any pictures, so it's hard to help you.

If you do not have this already, get yourself a separate battery, just
for the sonar(s).
Hook it up and then see if the problems go away.

If your 997 unit is doing this on someone else’s boat (if I understood you right) that has a correctly working 997 unit; than the problem is in the 997 unit itself and it will need to be sent into a Service Center to be tested and repaired.  Contact your local Humminbird dealer for the location of the nearest Service Center.

Greg's right it has to be something in your unit.....have you tried resetting the software to default values in case you have a software setting that is causing you issues?
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Reformat your sd card and download the latest code. (it is avsilable here also)
Make sure your update card has only the new update and only 1 .bin file on the card. I would not have any other files on it either. You can work on waypoints uploads later..

The current software for a 798ci Si unit is 6.300
If the file you downloaded was 6.350 than it is the wrong file for your 798ci Si unit.  You need to only try loading the correct software update file that was made for your specific unit.

I checked the download area of the web site and the 6.300 software update is not loaded on there yet.  You should go to the Humminbird web site and download it from your Humminbird account.

Chuck

Chuck,
There have been software releases for many units over the last month or so with new ones showing up every week.  I tried to e-mail you a list of the current software versions I have for the domestic units, but it got bounced back and said the e-mail address does not exist.  So will try and send it to you in a pm or e-mail through the web site.

Do you have a 798ci Si (domestic) model or a 798cXi Si (international) model?
I don’t keep up with the international model units – way too many models and software versions to keep up with those and the domestic versions as well.

Chuck,
4.3.3 is the HumminbirdPC software version.  I can BigFile you the 6.300 software for the 798ci Si unit but will have to get a good e-mail address.  Will send a message through the web site so we can take this offline.

I put the 6.300 for the 798 ci si on the downloads. It is for the USA models.
If someone has the international model version (6.350) and can big file it to me I will put it on the downloads..
chuck

*****Greg, I had clicked the wrong tab and got the HBPC list.  Thanks for the bigfile..******
Your web site is correct

You are correct on the list. it is a nightmare trying to keep up with all the releases..We will keep on trying though..

OK I have the update in the long name format. (4486e139e5e849d4bdbd36a0bec8e9b0.bin) I will file it under the 798cXi si catagory as 6.350
You guys help keep me straight on the unit types and release so the update (download) section will be correrct.
We have not filed the international versions but if you all help I will try to get those added.
Let me know if this is not correct.  Chuck

We probably hijacked the depth part of this thread so maybe we can get back to the original post..
