998 problems
« on: June 21, 2013, 03:02:49 PM »
Having problems with 998c freezing up while running simulation mode in house.  Using correct power source, and software 6.180 which has been on unit since first issued.  Unit will start/stop with power on mode, but locks up when I use view, exit, or preset keys.  Unit will not allow me to export waypoints on disc.  I have tried to remove the Navionics and storage chip and restart the system but it still locks up.  It will allow me to power off, but all other keys are locked out?  Any ideas?

shwayne,
Welcome to the Side Imaging Forums.  Sorry that you first post has to be about a problem.

Have you tried the unit on your boat and if so, does it do the same thing?

What operation mode are you trying this in: Normal, automatic Simulator or the forced Simulator mode?

How is it not letting you export the Nav Data (waypoints, routs and tracks)?  If some of these are corrupt it could be causing the freezing up issue.

Greg,

I have not tried it on the boat yet.  Using simulator mode, or operation mode.  Don't know what forced simulator mode is? 14.3 volts at unit.  Unit will lock up all buttons except ON/OFF button.  Have been running 6.180 for approx. one year with no issues.  Only have one unit hooked to transducer with no other connections.  Waypoints were loaded using HB PC converting Garmin numbers, or from the unit itself.  Same numbers for quite some time with no issues up to now.

Point of Sale Simulator mode is when the unit powers up without a transducer attached...which is the mode seen in demonstration at the box stores...any changes made in this mode will not be saved...

Forced Simulator mode is pressing the "Menu" button as soon as the HB welcome screen shows...this action will bring up a window with 3 choices...Normal Operation - Simulator - System Status...

Choosing "Simulator" from these options will put the unit into "Forced Simulator" mode...any changes made in this mode will be saved by the unit...

I would suggest "Exporting all Nav Data" to a blank SD card... "Delete all Nav data" (under the setup tab)...Restore Factory defaults ...test the unit again....

+1 on the Exporting and Deleting the Nav Data to see if this happens again.  Could be a corrupt waypoint causing this.

Unit will not allow me to export data.  It will not let me return to defaults.  Tried it on the boat with no better luck. I was using the forced sim. mode.  Thanks for taking the time to respond.

When you tried to "Export all Nav Data", did you have a SD card in one of the slots?
Also make sure the card is seated properly. It can get bumped while replacing the cover.
Try letting the unit start up in normal mode on the boat with the transducer attached
to see if that will make a difference.

Was afraid of that.  Your only option would be to call Humminbird at this point.  Hope they can resolve this without deleting your Nav Data.

What would create a corrupt waypoint on unit.  All numbers were converted using HB PC from Garmin numbers, or directly from the unit itself.  I don't use any outside programs.  Not that smart to program like some on this board.

Using Humminbird PC, I have found duplicate
Waypoints with the exact same name.
A Waypoint that is off the map (bad coordinates), may
not be too good either.

You may have had a Waypoint conversion error
somewhere along the line, or a creation of a
duplicate or two.

I don’t know what all will corrupt a waypoint either shwayne.  I know that some have reported problems with corrupt waypoints after they have updated the software in their units where the older software did not have a problem with the same (corrupt) waypoint.

So I guess my next question would be what happens when I receive my unit back and download existing waypoints that I did save.  Will the system lock up again.  Maybe this issue should be addressed by H/B.  Is there a virus check for info. imported into the unit?
This would seem to be a major issue if this happens on a repeated basis.  Maybe a virus scan on next software version, or H/B PC.  I'm at a loss.  Now I have to worry about adding waypoints?

Greg,  I only run the unit with Navionics charts, using the side scan transducer that came with the unit.  It is not connected to any other devices.  I do not intend to get the 360 degree system (although very cool).  What would be my best choice for software.  I last ran 6.180 prior to this problem.  Like I said I'm a dinosaur when it comes to computers and want to keep is simple.  Any help would be much appreciated.  The unit will be at H/B as of tomorrow I hope.

Corrupt waypoints are a mystery seems like sometimes...

Just to be sure to start off with a good clean base....
*Import all waypoints into HBPC ...
*Visually inspect each waypoint in the right info pane ...
*Look for duplicate waypoint names...rename some if necessary ...
*Look for duplicate coordinates...no need for 2 waypoints on the same speck of Earth...
*Look for number designations out of norm...if there is an E and all yours are W something's amiss...if all yours start with "088" and you see one that starts with "89"...something's amiss...etc...all waypoints should look basically the same except for the numerals (0-9) will be different ...

Before uploading the waypoints into the head unit...
*Format All Nav Directories-new software....or Delete All Nav Data-old software ...

shwayne:
Humminbird PC is updated from time to time.
Make sure you use the newest version to
check your Waypoints.

The corrupt waypoints I have seen have had illegal characters in the name or some out of the way dates (like one from the 1960’s!).

Funny you should say that.  I looked over some Waypoint data and found that Humminbird PC had issued a date on several WPs back to 1969.  Went through all points so no repeats.  Will see how it goes.  Running the latest version of PC.
