Title: 998 GPS
Post by: arkie12003 on March 10, 2013, 01:27:12 AM
I set a waypoint on the GPS and tried to return to it, track was on, and I did not use the cursor waypoint feature. It was very difficult to get back over the way point because the GPS update rate was to slow. I have had this problem with other GPS units does the cursor over waypoint feature have a faster update? I didn't try this I should have.

Hi Arkie

Yes, that's normal, because GPS is too slow. Therefore I use a compass to respond more quickly to course deviations.
The WP control using GPS, compass heading noted further steer with compass.

Arkie,
How is your GPS connected to your 998c Si unit?  A direct connection is best.
What software version are you running in your 998c Si unit?

GPS does not know what direction you are moving until it can compare where you were at the last reading versus where you are now.  This combined with the inaccuracy of the GPS system we are allowed to us makes slow speed direction and speed readings hard to accurately calculate.

We do have a new GPS Receiver that has a built-in compass: AS-GPS-HS.  It will always know what direction the boat is heading, even at slow speeds, and make getting back to waypoints even easier.

The AS-GPS-HS is a separate accessory and is not currently packaged with any unit.

It is my opinion that the new AS GPS HS antenna is the "berries" for slow speed GPS operation...

Do you remember from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"...??

"The snozzberries taste like snozzberries"...

Anyway....HB done good with this AS GPS HS antenna ...it is awesome for slow speed GPS operation...
