Current version of Humviewer does not work anymore
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:25:16 PM »
Recently I tried to review some files using the recent version Humviewer  that I had been using and it never came up after the  DOS screen came and went. I have deleted the files and reinstalled, but I get the same result. The odd thing is that if I install the first release it works, but the second and third I have will not.

I have screen captured the DOS window when it comes and goes, and there is a message that indicates that it can not find a log file in ...\log\*.log. I was not sure if this was just due to the new re-install or an indication of what may be goig awry.

I am not sure if the problem is a recent update to JAVA or somethig else. Is anyone able to help me troubleshoot what the issuee may be?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike
I will very much try to help you.

After you try to start the program do you have any files in the log directory ? If so, please send it to me at: humviewer@cm-johansen.dk
Else try the following:
Start a command prompt (press the windows start button, select 'run', and type 'cmd' in the small dialog that is shown).
In the command prompt change directory to where you have installed HumViewer (type 'cd \programs\HumViewer' if the program is installed in c:\programs\HumViewer)
Now run the following from the command prompt (without the single quotes):
'java -Xms128m -Xmx1024m -classpath jar\HumViewer.jar;ext\JMF\lib\jmf.jar;ext\JMF\lib\customizer.jar;ext\JMF\lib\mediaplayer.jar;ext\JMF\lib\multiplayer.jar;ext\log4j\log4j-1.2.15.jar HumViewer.HumViewer'

You will get some kind of output in the command prompt window. Please post that output here, and I will take a look at it.

Best regards
Martin

Mike,

When I had a problem loading Humviewer I did two things, the first was to update the latest Java software.

Then I made a folder on my desktop (called it record) I downloaded Humviewer to that folder.

Also copied my recording to this folder exactly the way it is on the chip "R00007 file folder, etc and R00007 Dat File, etc.

I run Humviewer from inside of the folder and it works very well.

Hope this helps.

I hope this does not double post.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. Since Humviewer has worked fine since the initial nstallation, and for some time since upgrading to the 3.031, I will work from the premise that something changed on my machine besides the Humviewer installation for now.

Martin, I was not sure about the exact text and syntax because it seemed like something was missing in the way your string displayed. Since it resembles the content of the "runhumviewer.cmd" file I used that as my guide. I hope the screenshot of the Command prompt screen posts properly for your review.

I have the feeling that something has become corrupted or damaged in the JAVA installtion, but am not sure about the best way to repair or remove and re-install JAVA.ila_rendered

Hi Mike
It definitely looks like a damaged java installation.

Try to open a command prompt again, and run: 'java -version'
and post the resut.

Mike

if it continues to fail, try going to your control panel on the computer and then go to the "add and remove programs", totally remove Java then reinstall. This should clear up the Java issue.

Martin,

I am posting a screen shot of the java version result. I am thinking George is right and I should just remove and reinstall Java. ila_rendered

Martin,

I had a little time at lunch so removed all Java related programs and reinstalled. I have re-attempted your first request of attempting to run the runhumviewer script and it has returned a different result for failing to start humviewer. I have inserted the screenshot below.

thanks For any insight you may be able to provide.

Hi Mike
I think it is because you have do not have enough free memory to start java with the options that I have given you.

Try to remove the options '-Xms128m -Xmx1024m' from the command, or play a little with setting them lower (e.g. '-Xms56m -Xmx512m'). Basically the original options means that java should start with 128Mb memory and is allowed to use up to 1Gb. My guess is that you should not allow java to use more than half of your total memory.

The problem with changing these parameters is that you might not be able to view very large recording files.

I just tried using '-Xms128m -Xmx2048m', i.e. max up to 2Gb memory and then I get exacly the same error as you. So try with '-Xms56m -Xmx512m'.

I hope this helps.

Martin and George,

It looks like the Java reload and the memory allocation change is allowing Humviewer to run. Thanks to both of you for your help. I guess I will have to do some digging when I have time and find out what is hogging all of my RAM. I have 2Gb on my laptop and it has not been an issue before.

It may be a disk space issue.

Open "my computer" "right click" on "local disk c", then click on properties that will tell you how much used space and how much free space you have on your computer.

A number of times I go through and remove programs and other stuff to free up my system.  I have an 80 GB drive and it fills up fast.

I ended up buying an external hard drive which holds a terabyte of information.
