Understanding Software Updates For All Humminbird Units
« on: February 09, 2013, 07:22:19 PM »
My question is, why when a new updated software for Humminbird products is released and we see so many on here that have problems?  I have a 1198 but not about to change the program on there with the chatter of problems.  It seems we go through this each time with software updates.  I will say that most of the ones that I have downloaded in the past have worked but the last new updates, I have stayed away from.  Why are these new updated programs released when they really aren't ready?  Just some concerns I have and when I see the folks on here that have the troubles that they do, well, I just stay put with what my unit is working with.  FYI, I have a 1198.....

I've wondered about that same question, over,
and over again in my head.

I finally realized that it's a rhetorical question. :)

There is no answer to it, or at least no GOOD
answer to it.  It's just the way things are. ???

We just have to deal with it.  If we don't like it, then
we can always switch brands.

It's best to wait (a few months), and do some research on
any new update before you take the plunge.

What I dont understand, is users updating, just because its a newer verison..

They dont have the hardware to run a Link or an 360, but want the software to do so.

I am anxiously awaiting my Link, but theres no way I'm updating sw while Im waiting..

Some of this goes back to the simulator..  Most of the guys testing the Link or 360 are doing so on the water and probably arent going to play with the simulator at night, so they wouldnt discover it..and really havent reported any problems with it, (but then again, why would they, its none of our business while its in testing..  the problem is when they release it.,  Then it becomes our problem, should we decide to jump on every update..

Hate to see her go, but love to watch her leave.

The main problem with the software updates, is the guy who put a great deal of money on a 1198 and 360 to have it crapped on him because of poor management from HB.

Us users do not know exactly what is in an update.
Humminbird may list certain things on an update, but we can't know
for sure what additionally has been fixed or tweaked.
Most businesses don't want to admit mistakes with
their products, and Humminbird is no different when it
comes to software for their units.

It's a certain peace of mind knowing you have the latest and greatest
software running your unit.  That's just human nature.

There was a time when everybody would just install a new update
as soon as it came out.  There was no reason not to.

Unfortunately, some of us have had to learn the hard way that it's
best to wait and see what others have found before we update.

I'm sure that thoroughly testing the updates is extremely high on Humminbird's
to do list.  There's been way too many complaints lately.

Your problems are very unfortunate, but you will just have to
bear with it until Humminbird can sort it all out.

Keep in mind that the 360 is a new accessory.
There's bound to be problems incorporating
something new into an already complex
sonar system.

Once the kinks are worked out, you'll have the state of
the art.

A $2000 accessory should have no kinks!  This whole update process in my opinion is the problem.  Back in the day a non working unit would have been retured, and dealers and HB would be stuck with hefty shipping fees.  Perhaps, a flood of returned units would get the point accross!

It's the problem with the new generation of electronics.. People tend to accept defective product and are happy to put patches over patches to make a product work as it should.

HB announced the 360 a year too soon, and when the product hit the shelves, it was full of bugs.
Not a management/marketing prowess here!

Cost has absolutely no bearing on the issue.
The units could cost a million dollars and still have
the same problems.

It's a computer with hardware and software
that's constantly changing.  Every change
needs to be tested and re-tested.

It's just too overwhelming for Humminbird to keep
customers happy with new models and
new innovations, and quick repair
turnarounds.

Since no new models will be coming out til the
Fall, hopefully the Humminbird programmers will
have some time now to work out the software
bugs.  I hope it will be smooth sailing by this
Summer.

Keep this in mind:
I'm sure Humminbird would like to solve all of these
problems quickly.  I don't think they want
unhappy customers.  Do you?  They are probably
pulling their hair out trying to fix everything.

Til they do, people with the latest and greatest will
just have to suck it up and bear with it.

the part of this that I dont understand is all of these accessories are released to testers and pros a year before they are released to us. Why dont these problems show up for them and are dealt with before they are released to us. Obviously some will still show up because you can't duplicate every situation. but something like the scroll rate should have been caught during testing.

That's a very good point.
It doesn't make much sense.

But, for a pro like KVD, he's on Humminbird's
payroll,  so he'll say anything that Humminbird
tells him to say about the 360.

It doesn't mean he IS using one or has
EVER used one.
He may have one on his boat just for
publicity.  It may not even be hooked up.

My personal opinion here: A pro like KVD could be on anyone’s payroll.  I doubt that we could have him say something that he does not want to.  He could just as easily change to someone else’s payroll.

That is true Greg.
I doubt that KVD would say something that is
blatantly not true.

But, he could make statements about the potential benefits
in fishing of the 360, without ever having actually used one.

This would not be lying, but some people may interpret this
as he having actual experience using one.  He may or may
not have actually used one.  How could we know for sure?

I agree on that, why update just to have the newest version? About testing the Sonar 360. Multiple times we asked  to test the Sonar 360 ourselfs. We are about 800-1000 hours a year just busy whith testing and demonstrating fishfinders with our customers. Testing before bringing a product to market could help customers. I know Humminbird has done a lot of testing but more testing in the field could help.

Working in software business, I understand with new technology there are a lot of challenges in moving items from a small test environment to the public. The amount of testing done is insane, but no software is ever perfect and users tend to always find something that can be improved or fixed. Humminbird wouldn't still be in business if they didn't have a commitment to fixing their product. These things just take time. Fixes may take longer than expected because if rushed they can create newer problems that are potentially more harmful than the original issue.

Hang tight! Humminbird will come through.

In support of what Greg said, when you have a resume like KVD, companies knock on YOUR door.
The fishing industry customers can be pretty cruel if you misrepresent a product.

What is ridiculous Bob?
That KVD may have never used a 360?
Have you got a video of him using one?
Does Humminbird have a video of him using one?

I'm not saying it's impossible that he's used one.
All I'm saying is that it's possible that he has never used one.

I was referring to your first post, not your second one.

But, I have seen a video of KVD using the 360 and being amazed when he saw a group of fish go by that had just been released after a tournament.
