Unit does not read updates
« on: September 20, 2009, 01:03:40 PM »
My unit, 797 c2si instructions say that I can put the updfates on my SD card and when I insert it, the unit will read that I have new ones on the card and ask me if I want to install.  But when I put the card in, nothing happens.  The card works as it allows me to read waypoints on it, etc, but there seems to be no way to install the update files.  I am running software version 3.940.  Any suggestions?

Did you check "Yes" and after "Yes" "No" when the unit asked if you want to install the new software?

Normally it should load automatically after you checked "No".

It takes a while to get the update installed and you shouldn't touch any button during this process.

There was no prompt to check anything.  It just started up as usual.

werndog,

Make sure the bin file is not in a folder on the SD card.  It should be on the root directory so the unit will see it.

Let your unit boot up completely first, then insert the SD card with the update on it.   You should get a pop up asking to replace the current version with the new one.  Click the right cursor for YES.  Then it will ask you if you want to abort, click the left cursor for NO.

The update will start and your screen will flash orange and red and say do not interupt.

Please let me know if you have any problems.

Werndog,
Let us know what the name of the file is and what size it is as well.  The file name should be: “M797C2.4_510.bin”.
If you have the internal GPS model the unit will use a different software update file.

It is not in a folder.  I have three files there.  M797C2I.4_510.bin,  M797C2I.3_940.bin,  M797C2I.4_180.bin.  I have the external GPS.  I have tried booting it up with the card in and without it in and then inserting it.  Either way it just runs normal without any popup about replacing the version.

If you have the External GPS version 797c2 (and not the 797c2i Internal GPS version) the file name for your unit should not have the "I" in it.  You need to make sure you download only the files from the 797c2 folder if you are downloading from the site here.  Here is a link to the 797c2 Download Folder.

You would only need to put the latest file on the card, not all three.  The latest one, M797C2.4_510 will have all the previous updates with it.

I also recommend that you do not put the SD card in until after the unit has completely booted and you have Restored the Defaults.

Don't forget you can also get the latest downloads from the Humminbird Website.  You will need to register your unit and it will only show the latest software available specifically for your unit.  The Download Section here was started as a means of keeping older versions for people who needed or wanted to go back to a previous version and is not directly supported by Humminbird.

Good Luck and let me know if that resolves it.
