1199 bottom lock problem
« on: June 22, 2015, 07:17:17 PM »
I must be missing something, please help.  I was out this weekend fishing in a pretty good walleye chop.  Due to the wave action, the bottom of the 2d sonar was up and down from every wave.

I set my view to zoom, and then turned on bottom lock. The upper left corner said bottom lock on, but the bottom of my screen still displayed the wave action, while the surface was flat?

Did the view you were adjusting have the "2X" in the upper left of the display ... ?? (Sonar Zoom view) ...

Or did the view have 83kHz in the lower left and 200kHz in the lower right of the display ... ?? (Split Sonar view) ...

I think "Bottom Lock" only works on the left pane of the "Sonar Zoom" view ...

I was on the sonar zoom view, it actually says "Bottom Lock on" in the upper left corner.

Are you saying the bottom looks jagged because of the wave action? If so then that is as it should be as your unit can only show the distance to the bottom from the transducer. The transducer is bouncing up and down with each wave. The bottom lock feature just gives you an expanded view of that. It does not flatten the bottom view. Bob

bob,

In the past, when i put bottom lock on in wavy conditions, the bottom stays flat and the surface will be wavy.  I assume that this is a basic computer function.  The locator typically displays data based on the TD being stationary and that the bottom surface is what changes.  As I understand "Bottom Lock" just changes the reference point of what is stationary to the bottom surface.  So even if you go into deeper water, the bottom will look flat and the surface will increase.

Obviously I have not used that feature much. In fact I can't remember the last time I did. I never used it under wavy conditions or would have seen more value in it than I did. I hate when my oldtimers kicks in. Bob (SO embarrassed!)
I have filed that under the growing list of things I thought I knew!

Here is all the manual states about the "Bottom Lock" feature ...

I haven't used myself either to know how it actually affects the Sonar Zoom view ...

Yea, That is where I found out I did not know everything. Being a reformed Lowrance user, I think what I thought I knew came from a "Botton Track" feature. Bob
