798 CI HD SI generating noise on VHF
« on: May 08, 2014, 03:54:27 PM »
I have the same problem as those in this thread:
http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=2973.msg16917

Tried separate batteries, radios, boats, even on a portable VHF 20 ft away on some channels and the noise continues. Bottom line is the noise is generated by the display unit. I've pretty much worked around the noise by turning off either the VHF or HB when not being used but I'm tired of this nonsense. I put in a call to HB customer service and they seem to have never heard of the internal filter fix mentioned in this thread. The nice lady promised to call back but has not. Now what? Keep calling until I get the right person?

I have not heard that the same fix can be made to the 798ci HD Si model units gofission.

The CRC folks have really been challenged this week as we had a company-wide celebration on Monday for almost half the day and Tuesday the phone lines and Internet went down… so they may just be behind in calling you back or they may be trying to find out if there is a fix for your model unit.  If you have not heard back in a few more days; send me a direct e-mail with your contact information and the nature of your problem and I will forward it to one of the Team Leaders in CRC and get someone to contact you back about this.

Thank you for the response. I can understand a busy week. Its the same issue as described and had fixed in Topic #2973 to their 798 CI HD SI units of the same approximate vintage.

I turned on my 798SI and pulled out my emergency handheld VHF radio, then set the squelch to 0 (no squelch).  No interference, so they did appear to fix it.  Hope this helps others"

Reply #15 "Yes I did get a fix.  I sent my Humminbird to the Ontario Distributer and they did a modification, free of charge under warranty. As the boat is away for the winter I haven't had a chance to check it but I assume it's fixed!",

It may be the same issue as described in that post but I was not sure that the units were the same vintage and therefore there may not be the same fix or a fix at all.  No one else stated a 798ci HS Si model which is internally different from a 798c Si or 798ci Si model unit.

However, I communicated with the Service Center Supervisor and he said that they do have the same fix for the 798ci HD Si model that you have.  You should go ahead and call back and let them know what has transpired here – that there is a fix for this and that they can call me about it if they need to.

I want to close the loop on this one. I gave HB service a call and sent my 2011 vintage 798CI HD SI back for the VHF Interference mod. It works great now!!! Glorious silence from the VHF. Thanks to all that helped.
