898 wiring issue
« on: June 17, 2012, 05:38:22 PM »
Just joined here.  :) my 898 should be coming in this week and I am going to try an install it myself. The only problem is I have no experience in this what so ever haha. I think I have determined where and how to mount the transducer, but as for the power cord I'm kinda lost. I already have an older lowrance unit wired to an accessory switch. The power wire for it is spliced with two wires(red and black) coming out of it. These two wires are connected to two other separate wires with the plastic connector things. My main question is how do I take these out and install the birds power cord back to the same wires?? Also is the humminbird power cord similiar to this one?
Thanks so much for any help :)

Much has been posted on this. Try a search for a few good hints.
 In a nut shell.
The HB is very sensitive to other influence.
The HB should be on its own power supply fused at the source woth a 3 amp spade type fuse.
There should not be any other "thing" sharing the power source. (ie: it own battery)
The wires for the HB shoud not be touching any other wiring cable. It might be nice to run the wires away from other wires.
Lowrance is a little more forgiving in wiring but you should be protective to the HB wires and maintain clearence to other wires.

ITGEEK has posted some great wiring information here. (Search)

Thanks a ton after reading some other posts I believe Im going to try and get it right the first time by getting a small 12v battery just for the unit.
How small of a battery could i get? Im going to try and put the battery either in the compartment under the drivers seat, or right behind the drivers seat to avoid running the wires with all the others to the other batteries.
Thanks
Jacob

We have used a motorcycle battery but have found it might be worth the larger battery like in a car.
