i bought my 999 and had it installed last week. while the lakes were still frozen i played with the unit in my garage learning a few things. the depth always stayed at 1.6 feet. the ice melted this week and i took it out and the unit performed flawless. while on the water i created some way points and came home and made a few in the garage just to play with humminbird pc. after making multiple trips back and forth from my pc to the unit and after making multiple saves and deleted files and different groups and what have you, i noticed my depth started acting erratic. bouncing from 1ft-1000ft and everything in between. i went on the water today for the second time and the depth read perfect until i got the boat on plane and then again with the erratic readout. it looks to me that there is nothing wrong with the install of the transducer. is anyone else have this problem. again as long as i'm just trolling it reads perfect but once i get over 14 mph with my 9.9 it just bounces all over the place. i do have a slight rooster tail of the transducer but it worked great the first time out. also my unit has powered off by itself multiple times today. any ideas. this is the first unit i have ever owned and dont know to much about trouble shooting yet

You need to be in the water for depth to work properly. Your transducer appears too high for on plane readings. The bottom of the transducer must be about a 1/4" below the hull. The back end slightly lower than the front of the transducer. I can't tell from the pic's if there is anything in front of the transducer that might disturb flow. I takes some work to get it good. Also the cable lookes stressed going through the mount. It should not go through there and the wire entry to the transducer will probably fail with that tension on it.Bob

thanks for the advice. i will try and lower it a touch as i don't believe that the water is obstructed in front of the transducer. i appreciate the input.

These SI xducers are just not designed for the water flow dynamics needed for high speed depth readings ...
Some are able to find a suitable mounting spot to garner high speed depth readings ... Some struggle ...
Most high performance hulls usually opt for the XP 9 20 "shoot thru" Dual Beam in the bilge with the AS SIDB Y cable ...
This allows better performance of high speed depth reading from the bilge mounted XP 9 20 ... While being able to mount the HDSI xducer a little higher on the transom for protection from impact of water borne debris possibilities ...

With a 9.9 hp outboard, you should be able to tweak the transducer location to get good readings at any speed that motor will produce. My 16' boat with a 50 hp reads just fine at 28 mph. It's all about location and tilt. Read the info below, and of course your owner's manual.
