Title: Rigging new boat
Post by: Diesel Pro on November 30, 2017, 12:15:07 PM
I'm about 99% certain that I'll be in a Ranger 1880MS for 2018.  Decisions were simpler back in 2008 when I rigged my Lund.  I just ordered the biggest and baddest 1197c and that was it.  One unit at the helm and that was it.

So now the debate is on

1) Helix or Solix?

2) Dual units at helm or one?

3) Dual SI transducers or a single?

4) 2D thru hull or external?

It's hard to go down in size, but the 10" units will fit flush mount at the helm.  The solix is now available in a 10" unit, but I'm not sure if a guy would want the first year on this or not?  I could start out with this setup and later add a bow unit or a second at helm.  The helm unit would likely be factory rigged.

Present fishing is mostly trolling and mostly occupying the main deck so a bow unit would get much less use.  When trolling I like to have 2 screens up. One being my chart with tracks and the other a 2d sonar to watch my depth trends. The chart is nice to have the largest.  If I had 2 units I'd run one as chart and the other split 2d with SI or DI.

Common sense and frugality says Helix SI mega at helm and then another lesser Helix can be networked.  Problem is it seems that Solix is likely the future of Bird so I think I may be better off sticking to the front runner rather than getting left in the weeds?  Either one I would want an external GPS mounted near the transducer like the HA unit I had on my 1197.
