Which Topography Upgrade
« on: December 28, 2012, 05:29:00 PM »
Hello,
I am going to purchase either a 598 ci HD Si Combo or a legacy 798 ci SI .
Understand I am fishing in a 14' boat. Saltwater. In MA Anywhere from a mile up river to a mile (on a REAL good day) offshore. Targeting striped bass.
I fish sometimes up to 75' to 100', but more often I am in the real skinny stuff like 3-4'.
My question is,, would another sd card such as "Navionics Gold Usa Fish'N Chip East On Sd/Micro Sd" give me more detail than the factory maps?
Thanks,
Mike

new map chips/cards will always have more than what is preinstalled. I would wait until you had more money to put into something you want than to settle on something you might not like.

Are you refering to the aftermarket SD card? Or the unit I choose to purchase?
If it's refering to the unit I decide on.. here's my take on that.  If my understanding of the two units is correct,,,
The only difference between the two units is ethernet and two card slots on the 798. I would never be adding onto the unit,so I don't need the ethernet. And therefore the legacy unit really wouldn't matter either.  I do however like the second card slot feature which would enable me to record trips to review later.
I have seen legacy 798's cheaper than 598's... but I just can't justify $2-300 more for the ci hd si 798.

you'll love having that second card slot.  I never thought id ever record when I went fishing but I was wrong.  I record every fishing trip we take and then go back and look at them to pinpoint structure and mark it on my map.  Its a great feature to have and fun to work with.  Between the 5 series and 7 series I go 7 all day long.  the bigger the display the better imo.

I believe the 5 series and 7 series have the same screen.
(the 7 does have a few preset buttons)
Anyone care to convince me against the legacy 7?

While the legacy product does work, it has been shown that these designated products do not get the continued attention often needed. Upgrades can be few and long between if at all. Repair gets a bit difficult as certain components are not available nor replacement upgrades.
This is one of our concerns right now with the 1197's we have.  HB does not have a swap/upgrade program so we cant give them back the 1197 and apply some cost towards the 1198..
